I would let them get a Hamster. But, make sure it's a male. Females go in to heat once a month, that's why they bite. Males are great. My son had one who would sit in his shirt pocket when he was playing his drums, or going for a ride on his bike. Charger was a long haired Hamster. They really are sweet.
