We had long haired hamsters but they didn't like to be held and we couldn't keep them alive, they kept getting sick. We would replace everything, including the cage but it didn't matter. We have a guinea pig now. He's much more friendly and alive.
Don't get me wrong, I like hamsters, we just had better luck with guinea pigs.
