| Stupid Question about Wireless Internet We are switching from Broadband DSL to Wireless DSL. At least, I think that is what you call it, so my kids can have access to the internet on their laptops when they are home. So I got all my equipment, the router, the adapter and have it all hooked up. My question is, if it is supposed to be wireless, why do I still have to have an ethernet cable going from my computer to the router? It's no different than it was before, really. The wireless light on my router is solid and I am here so I have internet, but how is it wireless? LOL?

| It is wireless to all of the other computers in the house. The router itself is sending out the signal that it gets from the ethernet cable. Make sure you password protect your network or anyone driving around or even in the houses around you will be able to use it too. When we travel, I am always surprised at how many networks show up when we try to connect to wifi. Too many leaving their networks open.

| Hmmmm . . good question . . .lol I think it's called wireless because you only need that 1 connection and you can have up to X amount of computers running simultaneously in your house. Not all computers need to use an ethernet connection

| Ok, that makes sense. So to password protect it, is that the encryption protocal WEP key? When I did a test on my dd's laptop it asked for a password. I entered the password I thought I set up and that did not work, but when I entered that encryption key, it accepted it. Sorry, Thank you for your responses!

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I'm confused (not unusual when it comes to computers) we currently have broadband dsl and with our router my son and his fiance' routinely use iphones and laptops here in the house. Wireless wouldn't work for us in our location according the the tech that tried to hook us up.

| I have wireless and nothing is connected to my computers. It all runs through our phone line. We only have laptops. Are you sure it has to be connected to your computer? Mine is password protected. The company set it up for me. All I know on that is anytime someone tries to use my wireless it will ask for the password. So, if yours asked for the password I think you must have it set up right\. Don't you love technology!?

| Don't unplug it. Your desktop is probably not wifi (wireless capable). A desktop computer needs to be plugged in. The laptops that are using the dsl are capable of wireless connectivity, while the desktop is not. I'm fairly certain I'm giving you correct information.

Donating YT 10K Club Member | No. It's an option readily available on pc's also. For the record, I have DSL and all our wireless devices work from it
