Oh yes, bipolar can (and I say this respectfully to anybody who has this disease) make you crazy. Out of your mind crazy. However, HUGE difference between crazy and physically abusive.

People who are in the manic stage of bipolar do get verbally abusive, and often feel paranoid. He has had a history of bipolar disorder and alcoholism, many people with bipolar drink in order to self-medicate. Mild cases can cause a person to be very creative, and some of his work would indicate that he is very gifted, however the down side can cause a person to want to harm himself or others. Many people with the illness don't like to take medication because it takes away their creative edge. I'm extremely skeptical of the editing claims. As insane as they were, the conversations flowed pretty naturally. And Mel said SO many disgusting, scary things, I think most of us could have been secretly taped for the past ten years, and there still wouldn't be as much damning material as has been leaked about Mel. And no, I'm not exaggerating.

He didn't sound manic to me. He sounded enraged and abusive. And generally people do not medicate during their mania, because it's a good feeling. If they drink, it's far more likely to be while they feel depressed, which implies lethargy.

Yeah, not buying that in the least. Sorry. I looked at the sight and it's the usual, blame the woman. And wow, she magically got pregnant all by herself. No, I grew up with that kind of #$@ and he is NOT the victim!

radaronline is the one obtaining the tapes. they claim that they have had them examined forensically and that they have not been doctored, for whatever that's worth.

Sadly other big stars have done bad things and still got gigs. He will too he just may not get as much money per movie etc as he was for awhile.

I do not think you can tell a manic by the sound of speech, although some do sound enraged and abusive, however not every enraged person is suffering from bipolar disorder. It actually takes months if not years to diagnosis someone with bipolar disorder and often a diagnosis is made depending upon which medication helps, for example, schizoaffective can look like biopolor, and behavior is often very similar. There are also euphoric manias when people are extremely happy, but it may turn to an aggressive mania as they get agitated, and yes many do drink in the manic stage. Remember that alcohol is a depressant; they are often trying to calm the hyperactivity of their thoughts.

I'm not questioning whether Mel has bipolar disorder. If he says he has it, I'm inclined to believe him. What I'm saying is, those conversations cannot be explained away with a bipolar diagnosis. I mean, anything is possible, but not everything is likely, or even reasonable.

I believe that bipolar people in their manic stages do not not want to slow themselves down. That's been my personal experience and my understanding of the disorder.

I have worked with people with mental disorders, including bipolar and schizophrenia, and it's not what TV, movies, and common knowledge project it to be. I think it's important to understand that people suffering from these illnesses are very often the victims. I understand mental illness is hard on the families, but it's absolute hell for the victims of the illness, and the worse part is the general public judges them like they would judge a sane person who's just an a-hole. If he indeed is a bipolar victim, he has very little control over his emotions, his thoughts or his actions. It's even more difficult for the wealthy to get treatment because they can pay people to tell them they're not sick, and don't need medication. Or they tell them that they just are an alcoholic, which is still so much more acceptable than having bipolar illness. Rich people's little skirmishes with the law can be brushed aside, but poor people are often court ordered to get treatment. He sounds like he needs treatment to me, and I haven't even heard the tapes.

Speaking of editing things, I had a friend once who was stopped on the street by a reporter about a court case involving a local politician. She said "I haven't really followed the case but if he did it, he deserves it" She was on the news that night saying "He deserves it" big difference between what she actually said and what was on the news. Really, none of us really know what went on with Mel Gibson and can only speculate. For all we know, he could have been practicing for a new movie script. And I'm sorry, maybe this is mean but I think water seeks its own level. I really don't feel all that sorry for either party. I do feel sorry for an innocent child who has been brought into this world and into the midst of all this chaos. I don't believe the girlfriend is a totally innocent victim either. I think she knew exactly what she was doing.

I agree also bipolar people dont want to slow down frfom the manic stages because they dont know any better untill they get on a medicine that regulates them untill then they think they are fine. That is another reason why its hard to get them help they almost have to hit rock bottom
