Found...Pit Bull on Xmas...Need Guidance...

Ann, PLEASE be sure to check your Homeowners Insurance Policy to make sure there are not exclusions for pets of "dangerous breeds" such as, Rottweiler, Pit Bull, etc.

I commend you for taking in this Momma-Girl but, please be careful to not put your family at risk financially if the unimaginable should occur and she does act out hurting someone on your property.

In the meantime, all you can do is keep on top of the rescue groups in your area & beyond to find accommodations for her with a foster family.

As a Yorkshire Terrier foster mom myself, we're seeing the most horrible times for dumping & surrendering. You can only blame the economy so far and then the rest belongs upon the shoulders of too many uneducated & unloving pet owners.

Good luck! That dog is so lucky to have you to save her. Just a thought, maybe you could take the pit to your local vet if you live in an area with not many vets, there might be a chance the vet has seen the dog before.

I just saw this thread today. Absolutely heartwarming and a true Christmas Miracle! I wish I had the resources and the guts to just take in a stray.
Ambrey has gorgeous markings! I love pitties like this! I've seen so many volunteering for the SPCA LA and I just love these dogs. One thing that makes them so cute in my eyes is how absolutely oblivious they are! They think they can fit in your lap and boy do they try! I've been dragged every which way by these strong babies, and I know they don't mean it, they're just amazingly strong!
If you ever needed a good workout buddy to motivate you to keep going, I bet Ambrey is perfect! Keep that in mind when looking for her new forever home. I bet she'd be happy with an active family that wouldn't mind an oversized lap dog.

I just got done reading this whole post and let me be on the list of co mending you for being her angel!! I did tear up and then laughed at the comment of how bathing a big dog is different....I have a GSD and I agree it is a major work out scrubbing that big body!! I wish you luck in whatever you decide is best...cause only you will know in time if she will be a great fit with your family! She is just Beautifulllllllll!!

We sure hope not , but vet didn't think so. We actually had her scanned over the weekend at the Humane Ass'n and no chip (no surprise there ).

Thanks so much - I have contacted a couple of those already (they're full), but am talking w/ "Benji's Buddies" and am sort of on their "waiting list" since one of their board members is a Pitbull lover , but I'll check out the others too - thank you!

LOL, that's exactly all correct. She sits IN MY LAP all the time, it's pretty funny. I guess the universe all makes sense now that I finally understand that my yorkies think they are HUGE and yet this super powerful Pitbull thinks she is a LAPDOG .

HEEEeeee! Me and Hubby were soaking WET after her bath - water all over bathroom floor - and YES, a workout indeed, lol!

Ann, I'm just seeing this thread. I teared up a little reading about how sweet natured she is. I'm so glad she found you/you found her! She couldn't have lucked into a better place.

And you've just solved life's mysteries for me! I'm going to look at my babies in a whole new way (or not, they're still just my tiny little babies).

Bless your heart. I do also believe those marks are from an altercation with another dog. Maybe not used for fighting, but from an altercation. My SIL visited for the holidays, and the day she arrived she had her two dogs at the groomers and they got into a fight at the groomers. The less dominant one has the exact same puncture wond marks that oozed the same way on her head. Westies, not pits! LOL.

Either way, she definitely looks like a real sweetheart.

Some say pits that fight would be agressive outside the ring. I personally do not believe this. Yes some are aggressive regardless, but fighting is trained behavior. They turn it on when asked, and off when asked. It is work/a job.

Thank you . She seriously has *zero*, and I mean zero, aggression. She has less aggression than either Wylie or Marcel, which is weird. She really is just goo. Good point on the altercation...I have come to think bc she was loose, she got into a scrap and had to defend herself, and the wounds became infected. This is just such a heartwarming story all the way around! And, another reason I really love most larger dogs. They, in very generalized terms seem more laid back and relaxed, than many smaller breeds, and I know many pit bulls that are huge couch potatoes and very ho hum about life! The way she reacts to a chew, definitely makes her sound very young. You have earned yourself many halos!

Ann ~ what a sweetie you are


Last year, I helped (well lead) the rehoming of my younger (21 y/o) brothers pit Lola. She was almost 1 year old at the time, and did have her first heat which made her nips look as if she had pups (but she didn't). Anyway, I had a very, very hard time finding a rescue for her, and we were under the gun, as my brother was moving out of his rented house and had to travel for work. He loved Lola with all his heart, but under the circumstances it was best for Lola to find a permanent stable home. And NO WAY was she going to a Shelter...

Through friends of friends of friends of friends, I was able to get Lola a "private" foster home, meaning the foster home wasn't through a rescue. We set Lola up with all she needed (food, bed, etc...) We got Lola up to date on her shots, and we had her spayed once her heat was through. In the meantime, I did find a really great Bully Rescue: http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/bbrct.html
While they didn't have a foster home open for Lola, they did post her info on their petfinder account, and after about 3 or 4 months, Lola was adopted!!!! She went to a loving home in CT, 5 acres and she got a Pit Brother (Petey) ~ they are doing very well...

This rescue charges $200 adoption fee (which made me happy to know that Lola's Dad was willing to pay that much for her, being a Pit ) The rescue really didn't have to do alot in this case...we did everything to get Lola ready, they did a home inspection etc...It all worked out great!

I hope everything works out in this case too

I let her "have her lead" as we were in a neighborhood and I was curious...interestingly...we came upon a driveway which she walked right into and then proceeded to walk to the side of the house, and then to the backyard gate, which was right there, looking up at me like "are you going to let me in?". This house was for sale and empty .

Please see pics for wounds and I have some questions & details:

**First & foremost, no worries, we will not be taking her to the Humane Ass'n as she is a Pitbull and would likely be put to sleep
**She is a TOTAL sweetheart!!! Very loving and happy-go-lucky.
**She knows how to sit very well.
**Collar in pics is not hers - this is a choke collar I removed from a Lab we rescued in our neighborhood about 2mths ago - she has no collar (don't yet know about chip, but doubt it.)
**Claws not terribly overgrown, but haven't been cut in a while; ears filthy inside...no itching observed, but infection possible.
**Teeth NOT filed down - gorgeous white - estimate age 1-1.5/2
**We have not had her around the boys as we don't know her history

Questions, esp. about wounds:

**First, older wounds are on top of head -- fresher/pinker one is to right of right eye
**Various random, minor, healed scratches and "bumps" on other body areas
**LARGER (about size of 3 nickels lined up) very thickened, scabbed over wound above front leg -- below where collar would sit. Healing fine...but weird . (no pic as covered well by fur...older scab/wound, but thick!)

**Also, see nipples...did she have a litter in her a past?

MOST IMPORTANTLY...do you think these are the classic wounds of a dog who was forced to fight...or are these perhaps just signs of a fight from her being on her own?

Bc if they are clearly from fighting, there is *no* way I will make any attempt whatsoever to find her owners, ya know?

Lastly, she is a total darling and sweetheart - no cowering, not submissive, just a doll -- I'm calling her "ALARIA" for now bc I wanted her name to sound like a little angel .

Advice/thoughts?

She has definately had pups, and for the scars its from fighting hopefully not made to fight. Be cautious around the little ones, I rented a double wide trailer to a guy with a pit. He and she I never trusted around my dogs. Kevin said his dog picked up a yorkie by its neck and shook it to death. So he said do not let your dogs near my pits. I would really not ever let them be together. That is me though. Good luck with the dog, maybe see if local papers someone has posted an ad looking for him.

I know we will find her a perfect forever home bc we will accept nothing less for her . I found a *free* spay program through our County (first come/first serve) on Jan. 9th - so I'm checking that out for quality. Otherwise, we'll get her spayed at our Humane Ass'n as I know they are good; then shots too and chip. If infection is totally clearing, then I will proceed with these things .

She is *perfectly* potty trained, a total lover, not possessive of a single solitary thing you give her, a cuddler, a doll, gorgeous.

So I just feel she will find a great home, ya know?

While it isn't easy or stress-free keeping the boys completely separated from Ambrey - she is worth it. The one rescue who is willing to talk w/ me - Benji's Buddies - has me on their waiting list...but aren't offering any help beyond that right now. And all other Pit rescues/general rescues I've contacted just say "sorry, we're full right now" (and that's it) - it's really bad out there right now for abandoned animals.

Yup, Benji's Buddies will - but only after she is spayed - and I'm totally fine with that . I just don't want to get her spayed this second bc she just got here and gets upset just when I leave the room () (so, anxiety) - and plus, the head infection - I don't want to put any more stress on her immune system.

Even though the vet I took her to said "oh yeah, she can be spayed right away" -- I just don't feel that way , that's just me. Her anxiety is getting better each day...and we're helping her with it...so I think Jan. 9th is in plenty of time. I know you know what I mean .
