Bless your heart. I do also believe those marks are from an altercation with another dog. Maybe not used for fighting, but from an altercation. My SIL visited for the holidays, and the day she arrived she had her two dogs at the groomers and they got into a fight at the groomers. The less dominant one has the exact same puncture wond marks that oozed the same way on her head. Westies, not pits! LOL.
Either way, she definitely looks like a real sweetheart.
Some say pits that fight would be agressive outside the ring. I personally do not believe this. Yes some are aggressive regardless, but fighting is trained behavior. They turn it on when asked, and off when asked. It is work/a job.
