| Darn it! I became a vegetarian right before Thanksgiving! AND I LOVE TURKEY!!! Does anyone have any suggestions for a main course that I can prepare? I will still be making turkey for everyone else. I hope I can resist it. I became a vegetarian a few months ago due to my love of animals. |

| Do you want fake turkey or something altogether different? I'm going through the same thing, btw.

| Never had it. I have had the Quorn turkey and I don't like it at all. The Quorn chicken is yummy though. I am thinking about having ravioli with a thick tomato-y and cream sauce. It's so good, but I don't know. This is really good if you like quinoa and butternut squash: Lemony Quinoa with Butternut Squash | Recipe from FatFree Vegan Kitchen

| Tofurky is hard to work with I think. And no matter what you do to it, it will not EVER be like actual turkey/dressing. There are a few other fake meals (Whole Foods makes one for example) that are edible as well. And the longer you've been away from actual meat the better off you are with them. They aren't awful, some are quite good, but I think you will be disappointed and still miss the turkey if thats what you're looking for. I've been vegetarian for about 15 years and what I do now is the leftovers approach. I make a veggie meal for the actual day with no turkey substitute and then get soy turkey sandwich meat and make sandwiches the day after. I put dressing, cranberry sauce, and the works on them. But it was always the day after sandwiches that I liked the best anyway. Find some good new recipes to try and adapt some of the family favorites and in the end you'll be plenty stuffed without the turkey. This year I'm making vegan Harvest Casserole and vegan pumpkin-apple-spice cookies to take to my family get together. Happy Thanksgiving.

| I'm a vegan, so just the thought of eating any kind of meat just turns me totally off. We have an holistic vegan food store that is acturally making up some type of soy based "meat" with dressing and all. You may want to find out if you have a store like that in your area. I'm just going to make up my own dressing, cranberry sauce and a polenta casserole and have some fresh squash and steamed collard greens and kale. Yum.

| I never get the whole not eating meat for the love of animals thing... I'm NOT saying this to be mean, I'm just highly curious and intrigued and wish to know more of your decision. The human brain developed from eating meat and I feel it's just part of the natural food chain and an important part of the human diet. All animals (including human animals) eat other animals, it's just the way the world has worked since the beginning of time. All existence would become extinct if everyone stopped eating meat. I do not believe in the way certain places kill their animals but if you do your research, you can see who to support and who not to. I think if it's being humanely done, there is nothing wrong with the process. If you like turkey.... eat it! Don't look for the "fake" stuff because it's just not the same. I understand if you just flat out don't like the taste of meat or something... but to not eat meat simply because your love of animals seems silly to me, but like I said, I'm just very curious about why you made that decision.

| I decided to become a vegetarian (or pescatarian...don't even know myself at the moment) six months ago for the love of animals. Videos of factory farming lead me to that decision, but then of course there is humane raised meat available. But I go back to one thing. I was at a fair last year and we were walking through. We stopped to see a cow and she was just so nice. So I asked myself a question. Why would I want to eat this sweet girl? And the answer is I wouldn't want to. That is me though and I don't tell people they shouldn't eat meat. All I do want people to do it be aware of what factory farming is. I don't know if I'll be a vegetarian/pescatarian forever, but I do know that right now, killing an animal, cutting it up, frying it, and eating it is something I want to pass up. But hey, I reserve the right to change my mind. As far as meat being an important part of the diet, we have no nutritional need for it whatsoever. As long as it is done correctly, some would argue that vegetarians are healthier than omnis. I have no answer for you about human brains developing from eating meat because I don't believe in evolution.

| To the OP, while it's not a main dish, Wylie's Mom has a recipe for artichoke dip and it's soooo good.

| No need to do something different - have what everyone else is having, minus the meat. Make up some home-made stuffings and have a portion of this 'as if' it were meat (cook separately), and add a vegetarian gravy - simple!

| I respect your opinion, Britster, and I realize that animals eat meat too! However, I have seen too many videos of how animals are treated--chickens that live their lives cooped up in tiny cages, cattle crowded into lots and being pumped with antibiotics, etc. Those things really turned my stomach. I realize that there are more humane ways of raising animals for food, but I just decided to go vegetarian anyway. It has not been difficult for me--I realized that I was eating almost no meat anyway! |

| WOW...just finished watching the Martha Stewart Show and she had two authors on her show that even if you don't think about it from the animal side you have to see what they have to say about what is happening to our health because of the mass production of our foods. Very, very scary. The Martha Stewart Show: Cooking, Entertaining, Decorating, Chefs, Celebrities, Pets -- marthastewart.com She had some a menu for a vegan Thanksgiving.
