| I have a yard sale question It's been years since I had a yard sale but it's time to clean out the closets. I'm having an issue though...I don't know how to price things! We're going to be having a wide variety of house hold, antiques, clothing, shoes, purses, tools and furniture. If I advertise name brands and antiques will people still get here and expect to see yard sale prices? I see COACH and Dooney purses on here all the time for anywhere from $20.00 to $100.00 or so...is that o.k. for a nice purse on a yard sale too? What about jeans? I have several pair of Tommy, CK, Silver, Harley Davidson and some others. What's the average price for them at yard sales now? Should I advertise as a yard sale...estate sale or moving sale? I'm thinking estate or moving would give people a different expectation on pricing...what do you think? Last edited by my2boyz; 07-04-2009 at 01:45 PM. |

| Listing as an Estate Sale would definitely give a different impression on pricing. At any yard sale, folks are looking for a deal and no matter how you price, most are going to ask for a reduced price. I just had a garage sale two months ago and had a Habersham Plantation sofa table listed at $20 (these run upwards of $500) and I ended up selling it for $10. If you want to list the designer items at a higher price, I would go through Ebay. You will most likely get that asking price (or more) there, but maybe not at a yard or even estate sale. Good luck!!!!!

| Yard sale/estae sale/moving sales people expect a great bargain......WaaaaaaY less than you paid for it. Myabe you could list your higher priced things on Craigs List? If they see a few high dollar things at your sale, they usually won't continue to look at the rest of your things. Good Luck, Angie

| I would find a high-end consignment shop that knows what different brands mean. We have one in town that sells NICE stuff, like $200 designer jeans for $40. Which means they probably paid $20 for them, so that's pretty good, right? (and they were 1 size too small.... LOL) I've done well with my garage sales because I price stuff REALLY low. If you can't part with it for a couple bucks, sell it elsewhere. You can't go for more than $5 on jeans, more like $2-3. Shoes $1-$3. Purses people don't even look if it's more than $3-5. Picture frames $1. I think the most I ever got for a single item was $20 for really nice $200 rollerblades that were like new. But if I could sell all my junk for $.50 each and make $200, I was thrilled!!! I once had a women buy $20 worth of stuff that didn't even fit her, just because it was all marked $1. She said there was always someone in her family that could wear it, or something like that. If I had a $20 purse out there's no way she would have glanced at it. She obviously had $20, but she sure wasn't buying one item with it!!! I don't mean to be generalizing people who garage sale but I'm just saying if you want to cater to people who will buy anything and not have to pack up all of your stuff, price LOW. I mean, these people are walking into your yard to buy stuff from you for cash. It HAS to be a good deal, like they can't feel bad parting with if something doesn't work or fit right. I always packed up my leftovers and donated them, so there was never anything left to put back in storage. My goal in right now is to de-clutter and stay that way! Good luck with your sale! |

| I don't know anything about antiques, but I do know that people specifically look for them and will come EARLY. Any time I've had anything remotely resembling an antique (I didn't actually have any) I've had to shoo people away because they came too early and were only interested in that one item. People antiques shopping KNOW what the value is and try to talk you down, assuming you do not. So do some research and make sure you know the true value, because I think antiques are the exception to the "priced to sell" rule, unless you truly want to price it to sell!!! There is nothing wrong with accepting less for something just to get it out of your garage!! Last edited by Erin; 07-07-2009 at 09:00 PM. |

YT Addict | If I have something that I can't let go of for a couple of $$'s I sell it on ebay. All of my yard sale stuff I price really low. I'm just ready to get rid of it and at the end of the day I'm not taking it back in the house....it will be donated anyway. |

| It's okay to price most of your things with garage sale prices and then take a few select things out like D&B purses and expensive jeans and put a higher price on them. I usually put these kinds of things separate from the others, like right near your checkout so you can answer questions about them. If anyone says anything, just let them know, they are worth a lot more and you will list them on ebay if they don't go at the yard sale. Some will only be interested in really cheap prices. But there are also enough customers who know the value of things and will pay a little more for a quality item. But if you have designer purses, you might list them here on YT. They seem to go pretty fast!

| Thank you ladies. Our sale doesn't even start until Friday and we've already had people stop by...made about $450.00 in 10 minutes I like to see the big things go! I'll be pricing my things tonight and tomorrow so I can get them arranged on racks and tables. I'm going to put fair prices on the clothing and purses so I'll see what happens. Problem is...I have sooo many purses they might not all sell at a yard sale so I may be listing them here. My sister wants to look at my COACH & Dooney bags so I'll see what she leaves...but I have some Vera Bradley, SAK, Tommy, Fossil, Stone Mountain and who knows what else is still packed in moving boxes. I had no idea I had so many jeans...so far I have about 30 pair to put on the sale. |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Man, wish I could come to the "preview" sale. LOL. My feeling on yardsales...price it to sell or price it to sit. If I want to get rid of it...I price it accordingly.
