| Suddenly afraid to fly With the recent tragedy of the Air France flight, I'm suddenly afraid to fly. And this is not good as I'm a flight attendant. I've been doing this for quite a while now, and accidents never freaked me out before, but I guess as I get older I'm getting more paranoid. I think what's really bothering me is the fact that this was an A330, and I fly that exact plane at least twice a month to Europe. In fact, it has been my favorite aircraft to work on because the galleys we work in are nice and big, and the aisles are wider than the other planes. But now just thinking about boarding that plane makes my heart race with fear. Ahhh!! I'm turning into my paranoid, worrywart mother!! |

| I would be anxious as well. Its hard not to think of the possibilities while up in an airplane. I figure right before landing and right after take off are powerful times when the majority of people on the plane are saying a silent prayer for safety!

| It's so funny you said that because that's exactly what I do each and every take-off and landing! I say a prayer for myself and everyone else onboard. Especially since we're taught at training that the 2 most crucial times of a flight are the takeoff and landing, but unfortunately no one ever expects to drop from the sky 4 hours into a flight. That's what's so sad and scary about that tragedy. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I would be scared too . I feel really bad for you, bc those are fears many of us just don't have to deal with so regularly. Do the airlines provide any counseling for employees after something like this happens? They should...I mean, I'm sure so many are scared also, like you.

| I can certainly understand your fear, especially since you regularly work on such a plane. My hubby has been a flight attendant for the past 6 months and every time I hear of anything going wrong on a flight it takes all within me not to panic. I just have to keep telling myself that even with recent tragedies, it is still the safest method of travel. But, praying lots doesn't hurt either!

| I sure can understand why you are freaking out a bit. I'm sure you're not the only flight attendant/pilot/copilot saying the same thing. However, although I don't fly often and quit frankly not very fond of it, here's what I always tell myself before I get on that plane. If this is the day that my Maker has chosen for me to join him, it's going to happen no matter what. Whether I'm on a plane, train or in a car....or perhaps crossing the street. This usually calms my mind as it brings me around to face my fear of "no control" while in an airplane and putting the fear directly into God's hands. If this is his will, than it is his will and I cannot change it. It may sound silly, but it works for me! |

| Yes, that Air France incident made me send up a little prayer too! My parents flew Air France just a couple weeks ago to France from Texas (and back). Like someone else said, any mode of transportation has the potential to be dangerous.... I commute two hours roundtrip to work every day so I always say my chances of going out in a car accident are pretty high (especially with some of the idiots on my route) but you can't have that outlook every day. And yes, prayer helps!

| We are provided with counseling whenever there's a tragedy if we need it, so that's nice. But there's also something else we have in place where if we're too scared to fly after a disaster then we can take time off without any repercussions. It's called "fear of flying", and that's how they code it in our schedule until we're ready to come back. That's usually when the counseling offer is extended. However, it's sort of an unspoken rule that we should only take advantage of that when something happens within our own airline (Northwest/Delta). Prayer has always been a part of my pre-flight routine, and it really does put my mind at ease. And true, if it's my time, it's my time, but I'd still rather go as an old lady in my sleep. |

| The Air France accident was such a tragedy, and I can understand your fear. My hubby flew to France (on Air France) on Saturday night and I hardly slept a wink, waiting for his call in the morning. I don't usually worry about him, but this was a little too close to home. Have you flown since the accident? Hopefully you just need one flight to get your "wings" again. Do you ever fly to South Africa, I'm flying Delta to the US in a months time, and it would be so cool to meet you. I do also have a few Northwest flights in the US, so maybe... I wish you the best of luck on overcoming your fear.

Although Delta does fly to South Africa, I haven't been there yet. I'm originally a Northwest flight attendant pre-merger, and that was not one of our destinations. We had more of a presence in Asia (I Japan!). But it is now, and I've always wanted to go there, so that'll be exciting. Keep me posted on your US travels, and maybe you'll be in my neck of the woods one day! | |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am not fond of flying and have only flown a few times. I guess the only way to look at it is when your times comes it doesn't matter where you are, but I am with you I'd prefer to go as an old lady in my sleep.
