Cream of Tartar is a white powder used in baking and other stuff (like, it's used for meringues and to whip whites etc). You'd get it in the spice section.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Don't use the pumice stone! While it does clean, it etches the porcelain, meaning it makes tiny scratches, and the next time the stain is even more difficult to remove, until finally, it's impossible. Pumice should be a last resort, and then save up money for a new toilet. Most stains are caused by mineral deposits, and can be removed rather easily by things that dissolve the minerals such as vinegar, or Lime Away. However, if you use too much Lime Away, you can "etch" the porcelain as well. Always use the most gentle thing you can to remove stain, don't go to the next level, unless you have to. Among powdered cleansers Bon Ami is said to be the gentlest, but if someone has already scratched the surface, you might have to step it up.

| Just so you know, Comet will not scratch the porcelin in the bowl. Remember there is water (clean I hope) in the bowl when you sprinkle the comet in therefore later when you scurb it is mixing with the water therefore preventing scratching. I swear this works wonder's. I used it for years in my home and put 2 new bathrooms in the Condo when I moved in. It's been 10yrs and not a single mark in my bowls Remember when you sprinkle it in the bowl to make sure you get it on the sides not just in the water. |

Have you tried chlorine bleach? I hate to even suggest it since I just posted a question on how to get away from it but it's never let me down with stains. eta: I did suggest the pumice if all else fails. Maybe I wasn't clear enough?

| I have hard water and mine sometimes does this. I remove them with a pumice stone. Add a little soap to it so that it doesn't scratch the porcelain.

| You are all working me into a sweat. I have 4 bathrooms and we only use 2. I clean them 3 times a week but as I said, had that blue stain. I used Bartender's Friend, and can you believe that I found a can of AJAX??? Most of you probably don't know what it is, similar to comet. I have scrubbing and scrubbing and is cleaning up. Man, I am tired.

I've used pumice and recommended it before; it does work, until it stops working, and then nothing I've tried that will work after that. I read an advice column in the paper, and a woman had a brand new fancy toilet, and she used one of the bluing cleaners. Because the toilet wasn't flushed often, it developed a dark blue stain. She could have gotten the stain out easily with chlorine bleach, without doing any damage, but she used the pumice. She got the stain out, now it has a different stain that is much harder to come out, and can always see a slight line. The plumber said that porcelain can be scratched and once this is done, it attracts a stain to the scratched area. I agree with Carol, Comet seems to work, if no one else has ever scratched the surface.
