Don't use the pumice stone! While it does clean, it etches the porcelain, meaning it makes tiny scratches, and the next time the stain is even more difficult to remove, until finally, it's impossible. Pumice should be a last resort, and then save up money for a new toilet. Most stains are caused by mineral deposits, and can be removed rather easily by things that dissolve the minerals such as vinegar, or Lime Away. However, if you use too much Lime Away, you can "etch" the porcelain as well. Always use the most gentle thing you can to remove stain, don't go to the next level, unless you have to. Among powdered cleansers Bon Ami is said to be the gentlest, but if someone has already scratched the surface, you might have to step it up.
