| Please tell me about Florida, son moving My son is moving to FL in a few months and being his mom I'm worried. Could you tell me about Florida, how is the job hunt their? He and a friend are going down with no job just a little money and then looking for a job. I'm worried sick, but he is 22 now so their is nothing I can do. He is going up by the gulf part of Florida. So any info about your state would help. Thanks

| Everything that I have heard lately screams don't go. My cousins ex husband wanted to move there while they were married, and she wouldn't go. Then they divorced and he moved there, no money, no job, nothing for him there, but if you knew him, you wouldn't give him a job either. Florida is one of the top states for foclosures, and if I heard right, they are above us right now (michigan) in forclosures, and I thought we were the worst! A couple of years back everyone started flocking to FL for jobs. I think thats why it has become so bad there now. Sorry I couldn't be more positive. I wish I could, but here where I live, that is where everyone went when they couldn't find a job here that they wanted to have. Keep in mind though, it depends on what kind of work he wants. Everyone up here went down there for construction and concrete jobs, so I imagine those are sparse now. Cousins ex went to the clearwater area on the gulf, and from what I have heard, has not had a lot of luck. It's so hard as a mom when your kid has his mind made up on something and he is grown!

| My Husbands brother lives down there and hes in construction and their pay there is alot less than here. Him and his girlfriend both work and they rent a small house and barely make ends meet. Alot of the jobs are low paying. We would have moved down there already if it wasnt for the job situation.

| I think it just depends on your son. There are many places in Florida that are vacation spots, so if your son likes to work with the public, there might be something there for him. I know that some of the "upper class" type resort areas have nice clubs and restaurants that would probably provide a pretty decent income. I don't think that there are too many "regular labor" type jobs there, but if your son is determined, I am sure that he will find something. I wish him well!!! Sometimes you have to "spread your wings" and give something a try. New Life experiences is what it is all about at that age!!!

| I'm on the east coast of FL but I'll try to answer. Cost of living varies drastically depending on location (as it does in most states I would guess). The more inland you are the cheaper it is (Orlando being the exception). What kind of work does your son do? Jobs are so hard to come by everywhere in the country right now from what I hear. The gulf coast is beautiful.

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | Oh boy, how to begin? My son too wants to leave the nest, only we live in Fl. and he wants to go north (you want to swap? LOL) The gulf area was very prosperous a few years ago when the housing boom, new houses been built and many companies were hiring, the cities were growing fast, but now, since there is no construction going on, many people had lost their jobs, many houses in foreclosure and no new business opening, on the other hand, on the east coast, things as far as jobs, are a bit better, Miami beach, Fort Lauderdale area, just like Shelby&Seymour said, he may find work at a restaurant, bar, a hotel, but still, not as easy as it was a while back, the competition is big, the demand for jobs is big but no many people are offering one.My oldest son works at a Ruby Tuesday while he goes to school, they depend on the tips they get, and customers are not tipping well these days, on Sat. he got a table with a check of 80.00 from where he got tipped 6.00, not even 10%, so yes, he may find a job,but he needs to keep in mind that Florida may not be as glamorous as it sound. It's just not the right time, I would wait a few months to see what happens with the new administration. All the best to you and your son

| I've been in FL for 6 years. 1. Finding a job is near impossible. 2. Finding a job with good PAY is extremely hard. 3. The housing market has plumeted, and buying homes is a GREAT idea right now! If he has a great job, buying a home right now is the best decision. If i could, i would! But if he's moving here w/o a job lined up, good luck to him! I don't reccomend it. Jobs are hard to come by, believe it or not. Especially in the bigger cities. They want you to have a degree, plus lots of experience in most fields.

| My nephew and his wife live in Wellington, they both work for W. Palm Beach Sheriffs Dept. so, their jobs are secure. Right now, i honestly don't think it's a good time to be trying to find a job anywhere. I can see where you would be nervous/scared. I would be, but, also know he's an adult. You will never quit worrying about him no matter how old he is, that's part of being a parent |

| I grew up in Forida and left when I was 17. I swore I would NEVER EVER do anything bad enough to get sent back . I'm not going to say how many years ago that was but it is pushing 40 and so far I haven't returned. I can't tell you about the Job market, others have provided some good information. What I remember is: It is hot and humid and there are lovebugs If I offended any of our family that lives in and loves Florida, please accept my sincerest apologies Last edited by chattiesmom; 01-27-2009 at 10:23 AM. |

| Please tell me about Florida, son moving Quote:
Cindy, did we have love bugs 40 years ago? I don't remember any when I was growing up here. Yes, the job market is terrible, the costs of living is high where we live, a suburb of Tampa. My sons are in construction but they build parking garages, jails, etc. and they are staying busy. Of course there is not much work in home construction. The economy is high, but they are building hotels, apartments, office centers on every piece of vacant land. Good Luck to you son.

| I dont think its just Florida that is experiencing the lost of jobs and foreclosures. I think its everywhere. Moving is great...as long as you plan for it and can financially do it. The smart choice would have been to apply for a job while your son was still at home with you. Many employers now recruit over the internet making it easy to do. That way when he went down there he could start working immediately. Yes...jobs are hard to come by nowadays....make sure he is persistent in looking...otherwise the little money that he has will end quickly. Housing is cheap down there...but everything else is the same. Good luck to your son!

| I'd be weary of moving here especially without a job. My two are 19 and 23, and have been looking for jobs for over a year. If I could get out of here I would.
