ok this is completely off topic but i need advice...

I just started a new waitressing job at Chili's...So i completed most of my first day of training...then the night staff comes in...they have 2 booths which are dedicated to the servers ( the eat there leave their drinks laying around...lay on top of each other all while talking...very loudly about sex and the drugs they're doing when they get off within in eye shot and hearing of customers) so basically I'm pretty embarrassed to work there I've never experienced a workplace like this...ever. Please help! Should I quit and tell them it's not for me?? Or give it time! I just don't know what to do! Thanks <3

Could you try telling them that the way they act makes you - and probably customers - uncomfortable? Maybe even mention it to your boss - without naming names.

I think you should give it a week or 2, and if you really are uncomfortable there, then leave. You don't have to LOVE your job, but it should be a place you feel respected and comfortable.

Yeah I was thinking about talking to my boss, he's on vacation for the next week so I guess that will give me some time to figure things out...thanks for your help =)

I would look for something else - you don't want to surround yourself with that kind of people.

If you mention it to your boss or your co-workers, you might be perceived as a trouble maker. If they are that comfortable behaving like that, the boss probably knows and does not care, or maybe joins in? Like others have said, I think I would look elsewhere for a more professional work environment. All of the Chili's where I live have closed. That might be a sign.

I would also look for something else. I wouldn't be comfortable there. I do love Chili's though! I LOVE the Ceaser Chicken Pita!

I'm gonna go ahead and go to training tomorrow...see if maybe the day shift is any better, if not I'm going to look for a more expensive restaurant that wont allow behavior like that....plus bigger tips mean I would need less shifts which means more time for school and nugget =) the chili's is in the same parking lot as my community college is located..which is pretty much the only reason I chose to apply three

If the boss is gone for the week it might be worth your while to wait and see how things look after he returns. You may just have juvenile behavior as a result of him being gone and them taking advantage.

If he returns and things persist you can always move along. The work atmosphere is definitely a reflection of the managers ability to run the business. If they are unprofessional after his return...he's probably not very professional either.

Ok long time server/waitress, whatever you want to call me, also a floor manager and catering director. In a lot of chain restaurant's without good management you will be the only server with the ability to look at that situation and think its wrong. Worked at Denny's for a short time during college (not my career highlight) and I've seen servers swear at customers, or directly within earshot, talk about sex in the server station, sit on the counters, throw things at each other flip eachother off. It makes it very hard to do your job to the best of your ability when everyone elses seems to be against you. Your management may help, or not. Good luck. I love the restaurant business but there is definatley some bad with the good. Happens in privately owned places too, but a whole lot less likely wince the person in charge actually has a stock in if the place has bad reviews.

This is exactly what I was going to say so... awesome post! I was a server in college so my 2 cents are: I wouldn't bother trying to talk to your coworkers. I doubt it would make any difference and it might make things harder on you. I'd even wait until you know the manager better before talking to him. At one restaurant I worked, the manager slept with most of the waitresses so you just never know. Keep up your training and look for another job when you have time- at least you're making some money while you job search and it's more experience which will help you getting in at a nicer place. Well I dont know if this will help at all but my boyfriend is a bartender at the Chilis closest to us and he works with a bunch of teenagers who would probably talk like that as well but the management at his Chills doesnt allow anyone to talk like that in the work place esp. wheres theres customers around. He told me that there was a girl that worked there that would always come in talking about her personal sex life and the manager told her that if she did it again she would no longer have a job there. so i would def talk to your management.

Good post! I was thinking the same thing. If your boss is gone this week, there is a very good chance that everyone is goofing off a little more than usual. I would stick it out and wait and see what happens after the boss gets back from vacation.

every job ive worked at.. whether it was in college or a professional place in a upper class hotel has these type of people.. they will always do this when the manager isnt there.. the manager usually has some sort of idea this is going on and hopefully when you talk to him/her they can talk to the coworkers to not talk about that kind of stuff during work.. but chances are they still will just not around you.. not trying to sound mean but its just from my experiences

If you feel it's not for you then i would just quit and work somewhere else. It might make you stressed out but if it's no big deal to you then i say stick it out and work there. It really depends on how it makes you feel.
