| Hamsters Just curious if there are any other Hamster owners here at YT? My son's 6th Birthday is Wednesday and he asked my parents to purchase him a hamster. So last week they arrived with Peter Pan a.k.a Petey! He is a European Black Belly Hamster. Is there anything I need to know about hamsters? We have never owned them before. My daughter was so excited about Petey that she bought herself a regular hamster female (she named her Tinkerbell) but she had "wet tail" and died w/in 24 hrs of having her so she too now is the owner of Petey's brother and his name is Stormy. Stormy actually broke out of his hamster habitat lastnight (thank god the yorkies were in a deep sleep or we would of had some drama this morning! - so now Peter Pan and Stormy have luggage locks on their cages! Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated!

| I am giving you the link to a great pet forum that has a hamster section. We have one a dwarf hamster named sugar puff. MY Daughter got her and another one that we thought was female that ended up being a male and of course they reproduced. I finally found homes for them all and now we just have sugar. The forum is great and any questions I ever had were answered there . Paw Talk - Pet Forums - Powered by vBulletin

| Make sure your son handles Peter Pan on a regular basis. My Daughter stopped handeling Sugar Puff and she starting biting. So now if she wants to hold her she has to put on gloves

| I raised Hamsters when I was a kid and whoever said handle them frequently is correct. Otherwise they will bite and no one likes that. Also, make sure their cage is very secure they are very good at chewing thru the plastic and making an escape. For years afterward, my grandfather would tell me how he found what he thought was a mouse in the chicken feed and went to kill it and then saw the short stubby tail and couldn't bring himself to do it. They also must be kept seperated for the most part. Or at least all females in one cage all males in the other or you will have fighting. They need to have their bedding changed frequently and beyond that, I loved hamsters, they are a lot of fun! Enjoy! |

| The one BIG tip I can give is that the girls will stink! THey will emit an odor especially if there are males near by. You do have to play with them a lot or they will become skiddish and can bite. Also the big blocks of food are they best thing for them. They are hard and it allows them to file down their teeth. Their teeth will keep growing and if they grow to long they can starve to death because they can't eat.The food is usually labeled as rat food. Most stores use them. A wheel is a MUST.Without one they will loose their minds. They need to exercise. We usually kept ours in an aquarium because they chewed threw the other plastic cages. OHHH if the wheel gets squeaky you can always dab a little vegetable oil on it. If the kids take good care of them they can live for 3 to 4 years. My daughter had one that we called "Little Man". He was the sweetest teddybear hamster. He lived to be 4. I actually cried when he died. I felt so silly. He really was a sweet hamster. He would even stretch out in our hand and let us rub him...OHHH to help them transition you can mix their water bottle with a little gatorade. Congrats on your new babies!

| We bought my daughter one too about that time. It had twins the next day. She couldn't figure out what these pink skinless things were, she thought her hamster had gotten sick. Shock to us. Good luck.

We have had several hamsters over the years and they are nice little pets. It's very hard to tell the boys from the girls, so be sure you have two boys or two girls or you will soon have lots of babies! | |

| My best advise is to make sure the cages stay clean because they will stink really bad. I my DD had one and to tell you the truth I am glad we don't have it anymore. She wanted it but I ended up feeding and cleaning up after it. Also the hamster got lose one time (my hubby's mother's fault, we were on vacation) and it ate holes in the carpet in two of the closets. |
