I raised Hamsters when I was a kid and whoever said handle them frequently is correct. Otherwise they will bite and no one likes that. Also, make sure their cage is very secure they are very good at chewing thru the plastic and making an escape. For years afterward, my grandfather would tell me how he found what he thought was a mouse in the chicken feed and went to kill it and then saw the short stubby tail and couldn't bring himself to do it.
They also must be kept seperated for the most part. Or at least all females in one cage all males in the other or you will have fighting. They need to have their bedding changed frequently and beyond that, I loved hamsters, they are a lot of fun! Enjoy!
