BANNED FOR NOT MAILING PRODUCTS PURCHASED | Should I Be Worried? My 17 yr old daughter (will be 18 in July) only weighs 99 pounds! Anytime we are shopping and she is trying on clothes, if the jeans are not a size 0, she won't want them. She just started womans fitness in school and her teacher says she wants to see her put on some weight. She is about 5 foot 6" She eats like a piggy, she just don't gain. I have heard her remark about her thighs, she will grab them and say they are fat! The girl has NO fat on her body, she looks like a walking skeleton! Should I be worried? |

| Have you talked to her counselor at school? Has she had a checkup with your family doctor lately? I would ask both of them for opinions, but I think you have a right to be a little concerned at this point.

| I also have a 17yr old and todays teens are unusual creatures. Talk to her. 99lbs at 5'6 is unusual. My 14 year old at 4'11 with a petite frame is 98lbs. Girls are so worried about fitting in. I would be worried as a mom not to scare you. I would take her to the Dr's just for a check up. You do not have to tell her you are worried yet. It is one of those sticky situations you want them to know and feel that you trust them. Talk to the physician if she is very active in athletics it might be the way she is for her body frame. You will be surprised how many teens have eating disorders and sad to say we as parents tend to get in that denial stage every know and then. I know I do. I have been slapped in the face a couple of time by this. lol . But I will talk to her and get a doctors advice if you are close to some of her good friends ask them if they feel or think something is wrong. They will tell you if they are a real good friend and they might be worring right along with you but just do not know how to say it. Keep in touch and let us know whats going on. |

| I would be concerned. WHen you said she was 99 lbs, I was thinkng she was 5 ft or somethng. At 5ft 6 and 99 lbs she falls in the severly underweigh category. Even if the doctor says she is okay, it doesn't sound like she has a healthy body image about herself

| That is quite thin. If she is saying that she has fat thighs, I would consider having her checked out by the doctor or counselor also.

| I would be concerned. I had a friend at work who's daughter was much like yours. The best thing she ever did was address it. They even had her put in a counseling center and I think it was the hardest thing she has ever done but it was the right thing and things are so much better now. Her daughter was about 15 when all of this started. After that, she went thru a period where she was binging and purging and also put on some weight but they continued to work thru things and I think things are much better now - she's 19 now. Good luck whatever you decide! |

It's the pressure these young girls have now a days with being thin - all the models on TV and actresses are a size 0 or now someone told me that -0 is a size now. The fashion industry isn't helping either (if you watch Project Runway all the designer clothes samples come in size 0 and if you can't fit in them you don't model).

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I was 93 lbs in high school and I am 5'6. I ate like a horse. I always knew I was thin but back then in the 60's they weren't thinking of eating disorders. I was extremely thin, my legs and arms are still like sticks, it's just the way I am built. My Mom was very tiny, she was short but had the same stick arms and legs. If you know she is eating healthy it could be just her body type. I would be concerned that she thinks her thighs are fat. I knew I was too skinny I just couldn't put weight on. People would make fun of me and call me bird legs. I hope she is ok.

| My daughter is also 5'6" and was 109 lbs till she was 22 and went on birth control pills. She was thin, but not overly so - had many curves and wore a size 2 - and she lots got comments about being anorexic all the time though she ate like a horse. But, to be on the safe side I would have her completely checked out, especially if she is complaining about any part of her being "fat". It is also important to know that there is a difference between eating lots of junk and eating healthy foods. I think lots of girls especially aren't getting the proper nourishment.

| To be on the safe side, I would take her to the dr. for a check up. When I was working in the schools I saw to many girls who would binge and purge and their parents never knew about it. Good luck.

BANNED FOR NOT MAILING PRODUCTS PURCHASED | I just had her to our family doc about 3 months ago and not one word was said about her being under weight. She was put on Yazz cause she has such heavy and bothersome periods. She knows I think she is to thin. She thinks she is fine, but when she came home yesterday from womans fitness and told me what her teacher said, she said she agrees that she should put on a few pounds. |

| You should be worried for sure! That's an obvious eating disorder. You don't have to witness her throwing up or binging to know that. Her metabolism rate is extremely high. Whatever she eats, it isn't turned into fat. Watch her closely, and always be there to talk to her. I suggest going to the nutritionist and seeing if he/she could prescribe a certain diet. such as a high protein diet. and as for the pinching the thighs thing: all teens go through some sort of body image issue. just talk to her and possibly get her into some consuleing.

| You know your daughter better than any of us, I think its unfair to say that she def has an eating disorder. That may be the case but it may not be. you can try to monitor(without making it obvious) when she eats and what she does afterwards. if you see frequent trips to the bathroom after every meal then maybe she does has an eating disorder. some young woman actually have a hard time putting on weight, she may just be one of them. My cousin is now 26 and all her life she longed to gain weight and it just didnt happen. shes 5'5 102 pounds. while I do agree that 5'6 and 99 pounds is extremely thin sometimes people have different genetic makeups and are just naturally thin. so to answer your question, yes you should be concerned and look into the reasons it could be. Good luck and I hope she is not suffering from anything.
