When I was about 12, I read a Readers Digest article that had pictures of drunk driving accidents. One was a car wrapped around a tree, there was a young boys body hanging out of the car, all covered in blood, obviously dead. I never forgot it and even when my friends would drink, I wouldn't ride with them.

| I remember things like this from High School. I definitely listened. We had a smoke-out day where kids were "dead" like mentioned above. I think most people completely forgot about it happening though. As soon as first period started, the councelor came over the intercom and informed us that one of our classmates had died....you should have seen everyone's face..definitely got our attention. Then she went on to say how they died (lung cancer, etc) and we realized it was for the smoke-out thing. But that initial "I'm sorry to inform you that one of your classmates had died..." really got everyone's attention. So maybe you can do something to this effect...but for a drunk driving wreck

| I hope you find a good way to make a strong impact. I've lost two friends through drink driving... In 2004 I lost the first friend... he was driving when he lost control and hit a tree head on, the two rear passengers came out with minor injurys, the front passenger had a broken leg and a few cracked ribs but the driver was killed instantly... The begining of last year I lost the second friend... four of my friends had been drinking in their village but decided to drive to the next village for a few more, the two driving were racing each other and one of them lost control when he clipped the kerb and shot across the road and hit a tree... none of the passengers were wearing a seatbelt... the front passenger came out the windscreen landing in the road he died in hospital a few hours later, the rear passenger, (who was pregnant with the front passengers baby), also died in hospital. The driver was in a coma for two weeks and was in a wheelchair for a few months after. For a few weeks after the crash you could still clearly see the blood on the road where my friend had died... Just before Christmas both drivers went to court for sentancing... they are BOTH serving 7 1/2 years for causing death by dangerous driving and driving whilst under the influence of alcohol. The driver of the car that crashed has limited mobility and confusion and visibility problems, he also suffers from flash backs of the crash. Sometimes the driver makes it home... but more often they don't, it's just a diceroll for who gets hurt or killed... the driver, the passenger, another road user or a person walking along the street. My friend suffers in the major way for the pain and suffering he has caused his friends, family, the passenger's family and also the health problems he has as a result and all this while paying out his prision sentancing where he has alot of time to think... and he rightly should do.

So as a teacher you DO think what we do makes an impact! All we as Public Safety see is the laughing pointing, and making fun. If you think that what we do does make a differance maybe we should keep on doing it.

Maybe you could find someone from a nearby town. Sometimes people will do this as part of their public service hours as part of their sentencing don't they?? (Just guessing here, but I know some sentences require community service). Contact MADD (outside of your community) they may know of someone willing to do this.

| Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I always like movies because they can leave such an impact if done well - and the human drama gets under the skin and helps us understand things that have not happened to ourselves - like movies about: the holocaust, drugs, south africa, vietnam, war (in general), nuclear war, survival (in general).

| I did the fake dead thing where we didnt talk and wore all black when I was in SADD. I think kids just mainly laughed at it. What I remember the most impacting kids is when they had a mom and dad come in and they talked about how they lost their child due to drinking and driving. What goals that person had, how much they enjoyed life, etc. The dad was up there crying really hard and I kid you not you could hear a pin drop in an auditorium full of high school juniors and seniors. It was really sad. I would find someone that was impacted personally and have them go up and give their testimony.

I hope the mother didn't see their attitude. How awful! I can really feel your frustration but what an amazing thing to do for these students, even if they don't realize it.

| YT Addict | I was a witness to a 12 year old boy getting hit by a drunk driver. He died the second he hit the ground or on impact with the vehicle. Those images will never leave me. I used to get night terrors and would sleep walk b/c of actually watching the moment when this little boy died. I was a sophmore in HS when that happend and on my way to school with some friends. I found it unreal that somebody would be drunk and driving before 8 am. My Friends and I were on our way to pick up the little boys brother for school. His brother was waiting for us on the opposit side of the street when his little brother came running up the drive way to give him his math book when the driver who was speeding hit the little boy. My friends and I were only a few yards away and saw the whole awful sceen. A year latter his brother who we were going to pick up and was a year behind us in school gave a speach about it and how it affected his entire family. His mother lost it and had to be institutionalised (spelling?) and his father became a recluse leaving his older son (our friend ) to basicaly raise him self. It still haunts me to this day. Every time I see children running around near a road or hear about drunk drivers I get a little paniced and my pulse races and I always tell them to be careful. I really hope you can reach these kids! |

| The day before our school made us go outside on the football field and the drama students put on a play. Bascially they brought in a wrecked care, had a real helocopter, and ambulance and acted the whole thing out. It made me sad |
