I think you've got the right idea. Whatever is shown has to be real, so many movies show such gory scenes that kids today are not shocked enough by anything fake or re-enacted.
When I was about 12, I read a Readers Digest article that had pictures of drunk driving accidents. One was a car wrapped around a tree, there was a young boys body hanging out of the car, all covered in blood, obviously dead. I never forgot it and even when my friends would drink, I wouldn't ride with them.
