I need HELP!! Ok we do a Mock Disaster on Prom every year. It is getting boring fake blood, fake patients, cars that have been already crashed. The teen agers are getting bored with the whole Do not drink and drive on Prom night. We did a funeral last year and the kids laughed at that also. Do any of you have any ideas on how do we reach them in 50 minutes, 1 day for the Prom. We in Public Safety are getting frustrated!!!!:( Thanks Rhonda |
Rhonda..some schools have kids walk around in black all day to "play" the dead. They are not allowed to speak and wear white face make-up. Also, what about getting speakers to come talk to your kids? |
I know what you mean, I went to Prom last year, and stuff like that is boring, atleast to me. So I know I didn't pay attentions. |
I know when I was little, some weirdo that lived in my city who was a different kind of religious freak (I'm a Christian- penecostal, so I know extreme), did a haunted house in his front yard one Halloween. Well, I was like 8 years old and was out trick or treating and my parents took me there for this haunted house. It WASN'T a haunted house!! They took you through what looked like a haunted house, but then ended up in a tarped room and they showed us REAL video and pictures of drunk driving accidents- blood brains, the whole 9 yards. My parents FLIPPED out when they found out what these weirdos had made their 8 year old daughter watch!! But I can tell you this, every time I'm out drinking (I'm 22!), and a friend wants to drive me home all drunk, those pictures pop in my head (no matter how wasted I am, lol). I'm sure you would need permission slips to show something like that. |
When I took driver's ed many years ago, we saw a film on real car accidents. Since it was real, it had a huge impact. I was crying. |

They did not care! Now if she would have talked to parents Mother to Mother Father to Father impact on the parents but the kids......we just can not reach them. With the HIPPA laws we can not show pictures of the dead kids I have picked up in the last 28 years. Impact yes!!! These are people they know or kkwen about but it is against the law!!:( |

I need to reach teenagers and I am tired of picking them up and placing them in body bags and then going with the Sheriif to tell their parents:( Johnny died tonight because he was drinking and driving. |

Actually it was the other day with my freind getting into a head on collision and seeing how she was. It had nothing to do with drinking, but just overall the whole driving thing.. it hit me hard. |

What if you had someone come in to speak that didn't die but became severely disabled or disfigured or had his friend/friends die because he (the teen who is the speaker) was driving drunk. I think that would have a big impact. I don't drink and never have, but I had a room mate in college who had a friend from high school that was in a motorcycle accident and ended up with brain damage living in a nursing home! I always think of that when my husband or anyone says they want a motorcycle. Sometimes dying would be the easier way out. Living with the consequences can be very hard sometimes, whether it is guilt about someone else dying because of your actions or becoming disabled yourself. |
Is there a budget? Or is this all based on volunteerism? |
Just because they laugh and make fun of a program does NOT mean that it wasn't effective. As a high school teacher, I see this daily. Kids do not want to show emotion around their peers. Call it a form of peer pressure. I have also found that if you involve those very kids who laugh or make fun of something, it can be much more effective. Pick the absolutely most popular kids to use. We did the random pick "day of the dead" thing and it shook up some kids. You pick kids randomly and take them out of class. They didn't return and no one knew what happened to them. Teachers played along by calling the office and asking where the kids were. At the end of the day, it was revealed. Know that what you do is important. Some of us really appreciate what you do to help young people. :) Don't get discouraged. |
