I hope you find a good way to make a strong impact.
I've lost two friends through drink driving...
In 2004 I lost the first friend... he was driving when he lost control and hit a tree head on, the two rear passengers came out with minor injurys, the front passenger had a broken leg and a few cracked ribs but the driver was killed instantly...
The begining of last year I lost the second friend... four of my friends had been drinking in their village but decided to drive to the next village for a few more, the two driving were racing each other and one of them lost control when he clipped the kerb and shot across the road and hit a tree... none of the passengers were wearing a seatbelt... the front passenger came out the windscreen landing in the road he died in hospital a few hours later, the rear passenger, (who was pregnant with the front passengers baby), also died in hospital. The driver was in a coma for two weeks and was in a wheelchair for a few months after.
For a few weeks after the crash you could still clearly see the blood on the road where my friend had died...
Just before Christmas both drivers went to court for sentancing... they are BOTH serving 7 1/2 years for causing death by dangerous driving and driving whilst under the influence of alcohol. The driver of the car that crashed has limited mobility and confusion and visibility problems, he also suffers from flash backs of the crash.
Sometimes the driver makes it home... but more often they don't, it's just a diceroll for who gets hurt or killed... the driver, the passenger, another road user or a person walking along the street.
My friend suffers in the major way for the pain and suffering he has caused his friends, family, the passenger's family and also the health problems he has as a result and all this while paying out his prision sentancing where he has alot of time to think... and he rightly should do. |
