| I say go for it if it's what you want to do! Going back to school probably won't be the most fun thing but it really goes by fast once you get going. I had a 8 month break between graduating from college and starting vet school, and gosh I was NOT looking forward to having to study and take exams again. I'm in my 11th week now and looking back, it's been going by so fast! I only have 5 weeks left until I'm out for christmas and done with my first semester (can't wait!!!). So it'll fly by. I'm not sure exactly what tech school involves but I know in vet school that although the lectures are kindof boring to go to sometimes, I love when we get to do hands-on things. I also love when I learn new, interesting things that I never knew before or get to do something for the first time (especially when I do it right!). So I'm sure you'll have days you hate being in school and days you'll love it. In the end, all that school is worth it when you get to do what you've always wanted to do I worked as a vet tech/kennel tech all throughout highschool. I enjoyed it for the most part. I really enjoyed assisting with surgeries. Most of the clients were nice too and I got to be around dogs and cats all day which I loved. What's not fun is when you get a client that's a pain in the @$$ or one that doesn't really care about their pets (the type that says "oh I'll just shoot him" ). Aggressive dogs and cats can be scary sometimes too...especially when YOU are the one that has to get them out of a cage on the very top... There are always good techs needed I think. I've always heard the turnover rate is pretty high. I think a lot of people end up doing something else with their life and I guess some get fired. So I'm sure you wouldn't have a problem finding a job with a vet practice. I think vet techs are really important in a vet practice. I've heard several vets say they don't know how to run this and that machine and other things technical like that so they really depend on their techs for things like that. Also, techs are the first person most clients talk to - they take most of the history from the client and it's important that they be able to interact with the client well. I think a lot of techs (including me when I was in highschool) go into their jobs because they love animals but aren't necessarily people-oriented and isn't always able to communicate with the client well...so it's important that a tech love animals and be people-oriented. One bad thing about being a tech is that mad clients will probably yell at you first...they may not feel like they can be mad and yell at the vet but for some reason will feel like it's okay to be rude to you... But with experience, I'm sure you'll learn how to deal with that. Anyway, I feel like I'm just rambling..haha. I think you should definitely go for it. With any job there are negatives and positives. I think overall it's a great job and you should enjoy it! And like Kalina said, if you start to dislike the practice where you're working or get bored with it..switch to another. Good Luck!

| Lets see if I can post this. I hope this helps see what I'll be doing. VETERINARY TECHNICIAN PROGRAM Vatterott College’s Veterinary Technician program is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association, and offers the student a hands-on approach to learning a new career as a Veterinary Technician. Graduates from the program receive an Associate Degree of Applied Science in just 90 weeks. Students in this program learn to perform the duties of a Veterinary Technician through classroom instruction, hands-on labs, and working daily with the animals on campus. Students work with animals of all sizes--lab animals to large animals. This program prepares students to sit for a national board exam. Those successfully passing the national board exam can then apply for licensure as a Licensed Veterinary Technician. Nebraska and Iowa require that veterinary technicians be licensed to perform the duties involved in their career. Some states also require a state exam. This differs from state to state. Licenses are transferable from state to state. Licensed Veterinary Technicians assist veterinarians in their clinics or hospitals, may assist research workers and scientists, or even work with animal nutritional companies or pharmaceutical companies. |

as for pay, its not the best if your looking to make good money. I"m having enough trouble trying to move out on my own right now. Lets just say i'm not making anywhere near 50k.... I think vet techs deserve so much more. without us, vet's wouldn't be able to do anything. The two vets i work for would be helpless without their crew of techs. The doctors do the surgeries but we are the ones who run the show.

| I don't know what they pay vet techs, but Banfield pays their vets really well. Vets starting out with them make a salary higher than what the average new vet makes. I'm applying for a summer job at one of their hospitals because they have a vet student summer job program where you get a lot of hands-on experience, and I know they pay well for that too (much better than any other job I've ever had). I'm not sure what I think about a corporate vet practice right now but I think it'll be good to find out more about them this summer and I'll get some good experience. Also, I know the vets that work for them get all kinds of benefits with their salary. Anyway, I bet they pay their techs pretty well too so that might be a good place to look into. You can probably go to their website to find out who to e-mail

| Lori, I think it sounds great, is this school near you or will you have to be away from home? And it's great that you could still "do hair" part-time, for a little extra income. I may have to take a job, any job for the income...and take classes to get a degree or at least certification. Then I can get a "real job"...hopefully. When does the classes start...do you have time to think it over...or do you have to decide right away? Hey, I'm rooting for you. I just know you can do this...and do it well, I've told you before I think you have a heart of gold...who knows...you may actually end up being a Vet after all.

| aw..that's sad. Techs ought to get paid better for all the work they have to do. Banfield pays their vets well though
