| My Baby Boy I just picked him up on Saturday, he will be two years old this November. His name is Jaden and he only weighs 4 pounds and 4 ounces. He has the sweetest personality ever! Just loves to cuddle and be held! He's done so well since being in my house, no messes or anything. We're working on getting potty trained and he seems to be responding well to going outside but I can't seem to get him to use the pads. I would like for him to be able to use the pads as when it gets colder here I'd prefer for him to use the bathroom inside. Does anyone have any tips on how they got their new yorkie to pad train? Also, he only seems to go to the bathroom once in the morning and once in the evening even though I take him out often through out the day. Whenever we go out he just seems to walk around and not go unless he's been fed. Is this a problem? Should he be going to the bathroom more? Also, Im concerned over how much water he's getting. At first he wouldn't drink any at all, I had to lead him to the bowl with my fingers and then he started drinking and now it seems like he drinks but not as much as I think he should. I've heard that Yorkies should drink a ounce per pound, is this true? Any information would be extremely appreciated! I guess I've got the "new mommy" jitters! |

| He's a cutie. At two years old, I would not be too concerned with how much he is drinking or peeing. He evidently is used to that schedule. At his age it might be difficult to try to retrain him to a pee pad. You might end up confusing him and making him think that peeing anywhere in the house is OK. I also would not worry about him going outside in the cold. They learn to go quickly. does he let you know when he needs to go out? |

| Well, that's the thing. Ther person who had him before, he wasn't housetrained, he was just in a 20 by 20 pen and it had an absorbant pad kind of thing so all of this training is new to him. He never lets me know when he has to go out. He didn't bark once this morning but when I got up and took him out he had to go to the bathroom but he never whimpers or whines or anything. It appears like he only goes to the bathroom after he's fed. Once in the morning and once in the evening...is this normal? I don't know why but for whatever reason I thought I remembered dogs having to go to the bathoom a whole lot more than that?? |

| Well, mine go a lot more than that, but I'm sure they're all different. Are you sure he's not sneaking a piddle somewhere? They pee such a little amount, it's easy to miss a spot or two before you figure it out. He is a real cutie! I love all the pics, but especially the second one. Congratulations, and good luck!

If he has been confined to an expen with an absorbent pad, maybe you need to get him an expen as that is what he seemed familiar with. Both my dogs are trained to go outside or on a pad. When I say trained to go outside, they pee when I take them but they never give me any signals. But when indoors, they have a pee pad in the laundry room, where they spend most of their time and so they know to use it if they need to go. btw, why did the previous owners give him up? | |

| Hi! Thanks for the tips! He's doing better now, and seems to be going to the bathroom more rgulary. I think perhaps it was just the change of moving and such that go him off of his schedule. He goes about 3-4 times a day now which seems more normal to me. He is a sweetheart and his previous owner showed dogs and he was bred to be a showdog but didn't like being in the ring. She really tried to work with because of his bloodlines and his colorings were great but he would just get too nervouse and hated being there and just wanted to be picked up and held. She has a lot of showdogs so she wasn't able to give him the attention he wanted and was happy to find a home where he could be an only child and get totally spoiled I'm so lucky, he's an angel |

| He's so cute! Love that first pic! Looks like you lucked out with such a cute sweetie! Congratulations! I would assume that it will take some time until he is truly comfortable with you and his new surroundings, and then he will be much easier to train. He has to learn your routine and you have to learn his. He may be giving you signals, you just don't recognize them yet becuase you don't know him well yet. This is a lot of changes for him all at once. My new little guy is 7 years old and is 2.8 pounds and poops everytime he eats, which is 3 times a day. But he marks all day long and drinks a ton of water LOL (Thank god for belly bands!) But when he first came to our home about a month ago, he didn't poop, pee or drink very much at all for the first few days. He was just a little nervous and confused. He pooped in the house probably 3 times. After that he started barking at me crazy when he wanted outside and it dawned on me what that barking meant and now we have it all figured out and no more accidents! Things will all work out with time. |
