Donating YT 4000 Club Member | oh yes that's for sure, my last litter had a bit of a hard time in the transition when I did it at 8 weeks, so I change the whelping box for the crate at 6 weeks now and it seems to be a bit smoother I also used the same pillow I put for the mama in the whelping box while she was prego and it seems to work wonderfully.. I am super happy.. they slept all night last night, they got up at 5 am but hey ... and the loads of laundry are getting bigger and closer..LOL |

In the past I've had a whelping box placed in a puppy play pen, never changing them to a crate. What I did do is line the bottom of the playpen with rubber squares (the kind you use for excersising) and place washable pee pads on top of them. By the time the pups begin climbing out of the whelping box and hit the floor they start using the wee pads. After their first shots, I begin bringing them out to the kitchen area for play time. Wee, wee pads at stratigic locations. From that point on they are pee pad trained...no accidents, never mess their play pen again (even with wee pads down). In the mornings I hear lil tiny barks asking to be taken out for potty.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | thank you, ladies, Mary that is a great idea, I wanted the babies to get use to the crate and see it as a place of safety, a lot of my adoptive parents like their babies to sleep in the crate so is never too early to start them getting use to.. two of my babies are crate trained, the other two are well bed trained..LOL |

| I start at 3 weeks, when they first start to get around. My pen is partitioed into 3 areas, The potty area is right outside the door of the sleeping area. They start to use the pee pad at a very young age. At 6 weeks I let them spend time swith the adult dogs, they are real good about using the pee pad. |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | thank you all.. Mary my babies are born in a whelping box with a cover too.. but is a medium size very spacious..LOL and it takes half of the pen,i change to the crate that only takes 1/4 of the space and that way when the new parents take them home they are use to the crate in the pen and yes I use a pee pad on the floor so far no accidents on the bare floor.. Jeanie thank you for sharing your ideas too.. I LOVE reading the way everyone deals with the rearing of their pups.. hugs, Carmen in nj |
