| I just read this thread and my hearts aches for you and Dixie! We had a small shepard once that did basically the same thing. The more we tried the worse she got. She was always hiding and would become aggresive whenever we got near her, if she wasn't hiding - she was fine. Occassionally, she would be her normal self and we would think it was over, but it would just start again. Come to find out, she had a phobia and would freak out whenever she saw an ant crawling on the carpet! They could be anywhere else but not on the carpet, and they were so tiny! But they absolutely terrified her. We got rid of the carpet! The only reason we found out about it was because of a neighbors child, she saw the ant and saw Lil Bit's reaction first hand. She said "your doggie don't like them little ants at all, I'm like that with bees!" Once the carpet was gone she never did it again, but we couldn't take her in the car without putting her in the crate. You need to take a deep breath and really be observant, something is terrifying her and I think once you discover what it is and take care of it the problem should go away. Good luck, you are in my prayers.

| Did anyone ever explain to her how to put her puppy's photo on as her avatar? I'm not the best one to do that or I would.

This does not sound like it is the fault of the breeder from taking her away from her mom to soon or from inbreeding. You stated you have had her since she was three months old. This is all new behavior that may indicated she has been subjected to abuse of some kind since you have had her in the past 2 1/2 years. The poor thing is terrified. Has some one or another animal in your household been tormenting this poor dog for a long period of time. She sounds like an animal who has been abused-frightened and has decided to stand her ground and protect herself from humans. | |

| Hello, I was just reading everything that has been posted. I hope you are doing okay and staying strong. I just couldn't imagine. I'm very sorry for you. From your posts I could not gather if you are home during the day all day. If you are not you may want to try and video tape her. Maybe while you are away somebody else is antagonizing her. Maybe a neighborhood kid or somebody up to no good. It sounds like she is really stressed out. The only other thing that comes to mind is something horrible like a brain tumor or cancer that is disrupting her brain activity. You might even want to have them check for a blood clot or aneurism. And this might sound completely off the wall, but do you believe in paranormal activity? Maybe something is haunting her. It might do you well to get her out of the house for awhile to see if there is any change. I don't see it as a behavior problem unless she has recently suffered a SERIOUS trauma. But then it wouldn't be a behavior problem, it would be post tramatic stress. I know you have gotten tons of advice. You both are in my thoughts and prayers. Is she this way with everybody or just you? So sorry for everything. Last edited by kristyrae77; 08-12-2005 at 12:34 PM. |

| I had 3 grooming clients on Prozac..not funny, so do not laugh! One was a compulsive licker..the walls, carpets, furntiure. He would even lick the print off the newspaper..non-stop. After 2 weeks on Prozac he improved 100%..and continued to improve until he stopped the licking. The other two were aggressive, constant barking and pacing...both improved..BUT I do not know if they have to be on it for a lifetime..I do know two of them were about to be given away if they did not improve..the licker would have continued to just drive her owner nuts. |

| Hi again Everyone!! I have not been ignoring all the wonderful support at all but several things have been going on aside from Dixie's scary and upsetting behavior. First of all, the INTENSE heat here in NY--today it hit 105 with horrendous humidity so it was a lost day. But today was the FIRST DAY IN EIGHT DAYS that Dixie didn't have one vicious incident while hiding. I have all of her favorite territorial spots blocked with clear plastic carpet runners --NUBS UP--so that Dixie cannot get under anything and get comfy. I am more convinced than ever now, that something spooked her on that day that she went temporarily lame and turned vicious from that point on. From the time she lifted that paw and started limping she has been wierd and dangerous when in or under ANYTHING. Anyway, I now firmly believe that something totally TRAUMATIZED her and she is suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome--I am not kidding. I am so happy about this FIRST DAY WITHOUT INCIDENT i COULD CRY..I have been so happy for the first time in over a week. My little Dixie, at LEAST FOR THIS DAY, RETURNED TO ME. The other thing that has me totally concerned and very, very upset is the fact that on Sept 7th, I go in for major lung surgery. I have been agonizing over what to do with Dixie for the week or so I will be in the hospital, esp. with what she is now going thru. I mean who in hell can care for her SAFELY?? Kenneling her is JUST NOT AN OPTION as she will spend 7 days in a crate and could come home worse. The neighbor that normally invites her for play dates with her animals is now afraid of Dixie and I cannot have that either. And so, at this point, it looks like my cleaning lady (who is a doll and can really use the money) will come to MY HOUSE AND LIVE HERE FOR THAT WEEK. This is a pretty good solution I think but here again, she is not a dog person and I wonder if she will be able to keep her cool if Dixie should "go off' on her. I have so many people involved in this horrific situation and also many alerts out. I will def. give Marie directions to my vet in case Dixie really is unmanageable a/o dangnerous. But at this point, this solution is the only one that gives me even a modicum of peace of mind. I am just so worried about Dixie's care while I am gone that words cannot describe my own fears for Dixie. But today was really GOOD. I was very low key, didn't approach her at all, was quiet and calm and even had her off the leash IN THE HOUSE for a few hours. So maybe, JUST MAYBE (please God) Dixie will slowly get past whatever traumatized so very badly and turned her into Cujo. I will do my best to keep you all posted on Dixie's progress or not, and I thank you all for being here. Tonite, though, I am at peace knowing that Dixie had such a calm and UNEVENTFUL DAY--God, it was good to see my happy little Yorkie back--I almost trusted her again today. So maybe between now and Sept 7th, she will gain back the confidence she definitely lost when she went temporarily lame from whatever spooked her or hurt her. Thank you all, VERY, VERY MUCH. Sue |

| I'm so sorry to hear you have to have major surgery. Prayers go with you. I'm very happy to read that your baby is better at least for today. All you can do is take it one day at a time. Isn't it awful sometimes how bad the timing of things happens? Wish I could help.

| You are going to have to collar and leash her and start re-training. Something has happened and bless their hearts, they can't talk. I'd keep her on leash and in her crate; if I had to I'd muzzle her until she learned again that she is safe and you are boss. It just sounds like something really bad happened and she doesn't feel safe anymore. |

| I really, truely believe that she has to have some 'hidden' medical situation that your vet isn't picking up on. I know that she had a sting or something but aside from that, I really believe that she is suffering from something. Has the vet got back to you with all her test results?

| You said it was really really hot where you live. Could the air conditioning or a fan be scaring her? Have you started a log/diary chronicling the time/day/area/weather conditions of when she loses it? It might be easier to link something together if you have everything written down in a chart complete with date/description, even down to what you are wearing. Are you wearing a jingling bracelet? High heels? Did you check all of her toenails? Last edited by Junebug; 08-13-2005 at 08:15 PM. |
