I just read this thread and my hearts aches for you and Dixie! We had a small shepard once that did basically the same thing. The more we tried the worse she got. She was always hiding and would become aggresive whenever we got near her, if she wasn't hiding - she was fine. Occassionally, she would be her normal self and we would think it was over, but it would just start again. Come to find out, she had a phobia and would freak out whenever she saw an ant crawling on the carpet! They could be anywhere else but not on the carpet, and they were so tiny! But they absolutely terrified her. We got rid of the carpet! The only reason we found out about it was because of a neighbors child, she saw the ant and saw Lil Bit's reaction first hand. She said "your doggie don't like them little ants at all, I'm like that with bees!" Once the carpet was gone she never did it again, but we couldn't take her in the car without putting her in the crate. You need to take a deep breath and really be observant, something is terrifying her and I think once you discover what it is and take care of it the problem should go away. Good luck, you are in my prayers.
