| Hawks and Danger We have 2 dogs, one of which is a 10 pound Yorkie. They both loves the outdoors and we have a doggie door where they can come and go as they please. We live in a rural area with all kinds of nature around. We are worried most about the hawks that seem to fly over our home. Can anyone tell me if they have had any trouble with hawks around their homes and if there is anything to do to keep them away? Thanks! |

My furkids Donating Member | I don't know of anything that will keep them away but, if I were you I would leave them out alone. If a hawk can scoop up a rabbit they certainly could scoop up a 5 lb yorkie or, kill it trying...I had taken the girls for a walk a couple of weeks ago and stopped at a neighbors house. We sat on the lawn for a bit and out of nowhere a HUGE hawk came flying around...much to low for my comfort...My grandfather used to hang those disposal silver pie plates around the gardens to keep the birds away.. But, I'm sure you don't want pie plates hanging all over the place..Good luck and if you find something that works...please share.

| I had a hawk check out my 10lb cat while we were outside in the driveway, it circled to check her out and it finally realized she is much larger than a rodent and flew away. |

| I wouldn't leave your baby alone too long! Our neighborhood has had trouble with foxes!

| hawks I live in Arizona and we have lots of hawk, owls and coyotes. I NEVER let the yorkies outside without me being right there with them. These are great preditors and not afraid of humans. A couple near me were walking there toy poodle on one of those extendo leashes and a coyote jumped out of the bushes not more then 6 feet from them and grabbed the dog. I have had other yorkie friends that had their yorkie picked up by an owl at night right off their covered back porch. When I was a child, growing up in Sedona, AZ, we had a chihuahua. We were all outside gardening and a hawk swooped down not more than 4 feet away and tried to get our little girl. So, unless you have a comletely covered on all sides enclosure, I wouldnt let them outside alone. Lynn |

| I've posted about hawks before. We live in VA on river and we have eagles, too! I know of nothing as a preventative, I had one circle the deck while I was out with all 4 kids on the deck. I am sure that if I was not there, I would only have 3 kids. We also have a GSD in the yard, but that didn't bother the hawks. There was a news story this spring of a hawk that tried to steal a 10# Dachshund, and a boy and his dad had to fight it off. Don't let your babies out alone.

| We live in a rural area. I would never leave my boys outside alone for two seconds. We have Hawks and chickens. A hawk carried off a full grown turkey last week! DH shot a coyote right in out back yard a few months ago. If you continue to let them out alone please be careful. |

| We live in a somewhat rural area of Pennsylvania and I've sat on our deck and watched as two hawks circled the area. We have a fenced in area off the lower tier of our deck which the Yorkies use but the only time we let them out without us is when the Doberman (120 lbs) and the Jack Russell are outside with them. The doberman barks at any animal he sees approaching and he likes to chase birds. The Jack is very protective of her family and will fend off anything that approaches. Although our females are on the large side of the standard (easier on them for breeding imho), our male is small at 4lbs. We never let him outside alone due to his small size. I don't think I'd recover if anything happened to any of my babies. We know many breeders (including close friends of ours) that tend to see their Yorkies as a "business". To us, the Yorkies are family, that we just so happen to breed. We don't kennel them and we don't segregate them from others in the household. It makes for better socialized Yorkies in my opinion. Because of how we raise them, they aren't afraid of other animals (dogs, cats, etc) or people. Terry Ferragame

| I haven't noticed them by me, but this was just in the news in the past week...I think this is happening someplace between here and York. |

| watch the hawks especially with winter coming. if they are hungry they could come and attack your york. i've had major predator bird problems in south jersey. not to freak you out, but the hawk goes for the neck and kills instantly... then can hang around for a meal. it doesn't need to pick him up and fly away. hawks are a serious danger. keep in mind people are building homes where they normally find their food source. now they are looking for alternatives because their environment has been disrupted.

| In my brother's neighborhood, everyone puts up fake owls on their houses. It keeps most birds of prey out of the area. You could get a large eagle statue or something for your back yard...
