| ![]() Pat~ That is a horrible story and I hope you reported those breeders to the appropriate authorities and they were not only stopped but severely punished. That is despicable. No animal should be treated that way. Villlette~ There is not just "one person" on here who feels that it is not accurate to say "ALL pet stores buy from puppymills". It is not an accurate statement because it is NOT TRUE. We all deplore the practice of puppymillers and we would do anything to stop it. This thread was started by a member, not me, who got her puppy from a good pet store. At least two others have recited similar stories. My point is that we lose credibility when we make braod statements about a particular industry when there are exceptions and that we should go after the source of the problem, the puppymills, rather than the pet stores. The fact is that both industries are operating within the sanctions of the government and that is where we need to start our protest. With the USDA who gives loans to puppymillers. We need to change the laws that allow this mass production of live animals. As a child I also witnessed horrible kennel conditions when we purchased a poodle so I have seen the filth and disgusting conditions with my own eyes as Pat described. I would do whatever I could to stop the suffering but that does not include shutting down the small businesses of caring, hard working people who do not get their puppies from puppymills. I have been trying to come up with an analogy of another business which would make my point more understood by those who are not getting it. As a matter of principle, I try not to shop at Walmart for example. I think it is a disgraceful business. They treat their employees poorly, they mass produce their products in factories in China where labor is cheaper and the workers do not have the same protections as they do here. It is not the American way in my opinion and this is how I choose to make a point. Now, I know that Walmart will never go out of business because masses of people shop there, but I still try not to unless it is an emergency. Does the fact that Walmart is a disgusting business in my opinion mean that ALL LARGE SUPER STORES like them should be boycotted? Target, KMART, Costco, Sam's? No, because not ALL superstores practice the same poor business practices. Another example is grocery stores. If the large chain stores started buying meat from steer that were fed unpure food, but the little local mom and pop stores were still getting their meat from locally raised and properly fed steer, you would have to be more careful, but you wouldn't say...ALL GROCERY STORES HAVE BAD MEAT. This would not be true and it would harm the legitimate small businesses that were doing things properly. You might say ALL FRANCHISE GROCERY STORES.... Maybe we could say ALL LARGE CHAIN-TYPE PET STORES GET THERE PUPPIES FROM PUPPYMILLS AND YOU SHOULD NOT BUY PUPPIES FROM THEM. WE ALL DESPISE THE PRACTICES OF ANY PET STORE OR OTHER BUSINESS THAT BUYS FROM PUPPYMILLS! No one is defending the pet stores who do this or the puppymils themselves! I think most who have read this thread "get that", I hope. |

| ![]() I am extremely Anti-Walmart, too. I don't think this thread should change to Wal-Mart, but here's a link: http://walmartwatch.com/ http://www.walmartmovie.com/ Wal-Mart abuse has hit close to home with me. They're anti-union and fire people for organizing, they buy from sweatshops, most of their workers don't get benefits like health insurance, they're underpaid, Wal-Mart ruins small businesses, too.

| ![]() As I said in the post earlier, I believe their business practices are unAmerican. They mass produce their products overseas where it is cheaper and they do not treat their employees here or over there fairly. They have a great PR campaign but if you research the "reality" or talk to people who actually work for them you will quickly discover that there is no social responsibility for this large business. I choose not to support such greed! |

My fiance and his mother both worked there at one time. Neither of them have bad things to say about the company. Are you sure it wasn't just some disgrunteled employee talking about or his/her rear for being fired? I really wanna know the truth. Where can I read about this and find the facts?

| ![]() The City of Chicago - the heart of a lot of unions - will NOT ALLOW a Wal-Mart to be built in the city proper. Those links I pasted above have some info on them. If you want, I can find more and post them in a different thread to read. I just don't want to sound like I'm preaching.

Im reading over these lins now. Im just curious as to where they got this information. The thing that sucks for me is, if this is true I wont wanna shop there. However, I live in the middle of NOWHERE! We dont have much here. Not even a target. I'll really have a hard time trying to find places to shop. You guys are saying they order from sweat shops, but they sells the same products and brands that the mall sells (like playstations, videos, etc) only its a few dolalrs cheaper. That doesnt make sense to me. Can you explain?

| ![]() I am wondering if anyone on the forum has bought a puppy from a pet store that was for a fact bred either by the owner in the town in which the store is located..AND, I am wondering if anyone has bought a puppy that bred hundreds of miles away in the south to mid-west and shipped. Look at the paperwork. If there is a name and addy look in the USDA licencing sire and see if you find the name of the breeder. Now, this is not to say there are not an occasional breeder that sells wholesale and flies under the radar and does not have the license, but that is rare. That license, in MY UNDERSTANDING, is necessary to sell animals wholesale, whether it is cattle, goats, horses or any other farm animal. Who has enough puppies to sell wholesale? Who contacts the breeders and the pet stores and arranges such sales? Can you say BROKERS, boys and girls? Am I wrong? Do I think each store owner goes from MD to Iowa, MO, MS,OK, etc. and picks out each individual puppy, plays with it, checks its temperment, joints and so on? Nope! Do you? There will always be some who will say there are good pet shops and I agree. They sell foods, supplies, grooming products and so on, but not companion animals. I choose to go to shops that DO NOT sell those animals! JMO. Of course, the views expressed here are the opinions of the writer and do not reflect the views of the forum...bet pet store owners who sell puppies are totally glad for that.. |

Maybe we can say "DO NOT BUY FROM WHOLESALE BROKERS!" and explain how to tell from the paperwork! That would be the answer to looking at any pet store. Look at the paperwork before looking at the puppy to avoid the impulse buy. | |

I'm sorry - I'll say this very nicely - please stop lecturing ME on the law...It's irrevalant to the main subject and it's getting way too complicated with these very long posts about the same subject. A Pet store is a Pet Store. Joe Public doesnt care who they get puppies from - they just need to know NOT to buy one. Why is this so debated here ..? Why would ANYONE defend them ?
