Martym112 got Saffron from a pet shop that didn't get puppies from a puppy mill.

"A family run pet shop that I'd been going to for a few years. They had been dealing with her breeder for a number of years & have lots of communication with him."

The family who run the shop gets the puppies from a breeder. She also mentions how happy the pet shop is when she brings Saffron back and updates them on how he is doing. Any petshop that buys from puppy mills doesn't care about the puppies and probably wouldn't recognize one of their own puppies or their owners if they came back in a few years.

Sorry, I just wanted to let you know that it isn't a puppy mill pet shop. You just seemed a little mad but your facts were wrong. Sorry. Hope I didn't hurt your feelings.

no petstore is going to say they got any pets from a puppymill why would they, business would be out the door..
Why would the breeder sell the puppies to a petstore, cant he sell them himself?????

Pat I think you hit the nail right on the head. I don't want to offend the original poster, but unfortunately you did say the breeder was in Iowa and the shop in Massachusetts, and it is extremely plausible that your puppy came from these kind of conditions. Not all pet stores buy from puppymills, I will give you that, but the FACT is is that you did not meet the breeder or see where your puppy came from. And we all know how easy it is for petstores to lie and tell you what you want to hear, like we've been dealing with this breeder for years and he is top notch. The point that others on YT are trying to express when we say pet shops are bad is that we are trying to dissuade people from buying from anywhere where they cannot inspect the facilities where the pup was raised themselves. Obviously we all hate puppymills, but just look at the pet shops that this woman Pat was speaking of was dealing with. They are the kind of shop you are defending, shops that DONT get their pups from puppymills but instead use private breeders. And I think we can all agree its a horrible situation. Just because a shop gets its puppies from breeders doesn't mean they are OK.

I think what the responsible breeders like Rini and Pat are so upset about with the idea of DEFENDING PETSTORES is that NO RESPONSIBLE BREEDER THAT CARED ABOUT THE FATE OF THEIR PUPPIES WOULD SELL THEM TO A PETSTORE...they would have no way of knowing where the puppy was going and would have no way of monitoring who was getting their puppy. To good breeders this concept is disgusting, and to be honest its disgusting to myself and many members here.

Marty I am very happy you got your puppy and that Saffron is healthy and has a great disposition...I just don't think we should be telling newbies who might come here looking for advice that not all petshops are bad. I think people should be hearing how to find a responsible breeder not that some petstores are ok because they buy from breeders. Breeders supplying petshops with puppies are not in the same class as responsible breeders such as Pat or Rini, and just because its not technically a "mill" doesn't mean the animals are treated well.

Many yrs ago I was friendly with a woman who owned a pet shop in Camp Springs, MD. She was a very nice, ordered special food (ANF) for me..any product I could not find.
She wanted to sell my pups from her shop, but that did not sit right with me.

She asked me once if I would like to keep her company on a short trip to pick up some puppies from a couple breeders who supplied the shop. YOU BET!!!

The first place was just across the Maryland line in a small PA town. It was a rural area and we pulled up to a place that had three single wide mobile homes on it. The breeder was outside and openned the door of the first trailer...out came about 30 Yorkies, Pom, and Chi's so matted an dirty I barely knew what they were. Inside it was Africa hot..no AC..pens of screaming, barking pups..begging for a breath of fresh air. I could not put one foot in front of the other..I might as well have been in a concentration camp..total shock. The other 2 trailers were the same..there had to be 100 toy dogs in 3 small trailers...the owner did not even live onthe property!

The smell, the filith, the heat was awful..the urine burned my eyes so bad.
My friend crated up a couple dozen pups and we left.

The next place was worse...I had to go back to the van. She saw how upset I was..her response..."Welcome to the world of dog breeders!"
NO....I am a dog breeder, these people are uncaring, money hungry monsters.

I tried to stay friends with her, but everytime I went into that shop I started to cry.
There are times in life we must take a stand and b counted..count me Anti Pet shop.

Believe me this is quite obvious that you dont share that opinion. But there is nothing educational about defending petshops. Not that there is anything anyone can do to stop you. However, we cannot ignore it or else people would think we actually agree with you!

Good point! I know that pet stores do lie and everything. I was just giving this one and MartyM the benefit of the doubt. i am very happy that MartyM got a healthy puppy. I am very sorry i_love_my_yorki that I upset you by posting that. I was just trusting MartyM's word and the pet store's word. I was just trying to stand up for MartyM. You both are probably right. The pet store might not have gotten the puppies from a breeder. Why wouldn't breeder sell them him/herself? I agree with you that we shouldn't defend pet stores. I personally would never buy a puppy from a pet store. No matter where they get the puppies, pet stores shouldn't sell dogs! I just don't think it's right. I agree that when I buy a puppy, I like to see the place where it was living and the surroundings and meet the breeder. JMHO

Once again, i_love_my_yorki, I am sorry that I upset you or offended you.

YorkieRose, that was a very sad story! I almost started to cry!

And congrats MartyM on your new puppy.

Midge5353....It's really ok to give the benefit of the doubt but the facts remain that everyone who is AGAINST pet stores have every right to be upset. There are WAY too few good ones - I mean really...think about it - WHERE would the puppies be coming from ? The breeder down the street ? no - they have to SHIP them in in trucks and cages from a place that mass breeds. It's a sad life those puppies have and defending ANY pet store just can't be done because the few good ones are FAR outweighed by the vast majority of BAD stores.

You were sweet to apologise and you had a point - then you saw the reasoning behind the passion - which is a good thing ! The idea of saying NO PET SHOPS is easy ...to get into all the law and other posts I just read is totally confusing and too boring for the general public....they need to hear Puppy Mill = Pet Store puppies - You'd be surprised at how many people are shocked when they find out ...I was.
