That is a horrible story and I hope you reported those breeders to the appropriate authorities and they were not only stopped but severely punished. That is despicable. No animal should be treated that way.

There is not just "one person" on here who feels that it is not accurate to say "ALL pet stores buy from puppymills". It is not an accurate statement because it is NOT TRUE. We all deplore the practice of puppymillers and we would do anything to stop it. This thread was started by a member, not me, who got her puppy from a good pet store. At least two others have recited similar stories.
My point is that we lose credibility when we make braod statements about a particular industry when there are exceptions and that we should go after the source of the problem, the puppymills, rather than the pet stores. The fact is that both industries are operating within the sanctions of the government and that is where we need to start our protest. With the USDA who gives loans to puppymillers. We need to change the laws that allow this mass production of live animals.
As a child I also witnessed horrible kennel conditions when we purchased a poodle so I have seen the filth and disgusting conditions with my own eyes as Pat described. I would do whatever I could to stop the suffering but that does not include shutting down the small businesses of caring, hard working people who do not get their puppies from puppymills.
I have been trying to come up with an analogy of another business which would make my point more understood by those who are not getting it. As a matter of principle, I try not to shop at Walmart for example. I think it is a disgraceful business. They treat their employees poorly, they mass produce their products in factories in China where labor is cheaper and the workers do not have the same protections as they do here. It is not the American way in my opinion and this is how I choose to make a point. Now, I know that Walmart will never go out of business because masses of people shop there, but I still try not to unless it is an emergency.
Does the fact that Walmart is a disgusting business in my opinion mean that ALL LARGE SUPER STORES like them should be boycotted? Target, KMART, Costco, Sam's? No, because not ALL superstores practice the same poor business practices.
Another example is grocery stores. If the large chain stores started buying meat from steer that were fed unpure food, but the little local mom and pop stores were still getting their meat from locally raised and properly fed steer, you would have to be more careful, but you wouldn't say...ALL GROCERY STORES HAVE BAD MEAT. This would not be true and it would harm the legitimate small businesses that were doing things properly. You might say ALL FRANCHISE GROCERY STORES.... Maybe we could say ALL LARGE CHAIN-TYPE PET STORES GET THERE PUPPIES FROM PUPPYMILLS AND YOU SHOULD NOT BUY PUPPIES FROM THEM.
WE ALL DESPISE THE PRACTICES OF ANY PET STORE OR OTHER BUSINESS THAT BUYS FROM PUPPYMILLS! No one is defending the pet stores who do this or the puppymils themselves! I think most who have read this thread "get that", I hope. |
