If you want to check to see if a breeder sells to wholesalers which usually translates to Brokers, you can go into the USDA site that lists those who are licensed by the govt to sell wholesale. My understanding is they must be licensed to carry on these activities and I have found more recognized puppy millers names on there than enough. I mostly checked the Amish(primarily) in PA but MO is the state with so many of them. Also, many of the midwest states have a tremendous number of them. If you want the addy of the site I am sure I can send it to you if you PM me. There are probably others who sell without a license but I would not think a broker or pet store would chance repercussions by dealing with them.
Maybe the adm could let me know it is okay to post the addy on the forum???

We got my grandmother a Maltese several years ago...

And we got him from a breeder co-op. (Many area breeders bring in pups to this one location) I'm pretty sure they tried to sell them the other ways, too- privately and online.

I wish it were possible to have more co-op type places. I think that it would eliminate the need for chain/puppy mill stores. The mom/pop places sound a lot like a co-op. You can go see many kinds of puppies firsthand and play with them.

Sounds like your grandma's baby was bred within a short distance from where she was bought.
Millers sell to brokers who ship the puppies usually by van, across country. The prices are great on the East Coast and it is hard to sell, say 20 diff breeds, and make as much money as if a broker takes the whole bunch and re-sells them to different pet stores..

Some were close by but I think others shipped pups in to the co-op... It's been so long it's hard to remember. The place shut down recently. I think the lady who owned and operated it retired.

[QUOTE=whispersmom2]Mercy me, I don't mind a confrontation when anyone gets feisty about my Yorkies. How about "I came, I saw, I loved, I bought!" Or, "isn't he just gorgeous? If I told you where I got him I would have to kill you!"
Or" Isaw someone who was not nice with this sweet baby and I beat them to the ground and grabbed him and ran. Please don't tell anybody!"
It is rude if they are just asking to be nosy. But, if you ask "oh, are you considering buying one?" and walk away, you have avoided the inevitable..[/QUOTE

I love your answers..hehehe...

Default pet shops

There is a side many overlook...As a long time breeder I have devoted so much to producing a well adjusted, healthy litter of Yorkie babies..as many beeders here.
There is NO WAY on this earth I am going to turn them over to a pet shop to sit in cage all day waiting for a home..plus, the fact the pet shop owner HAS to sell by law, my puppy to anyone who walks through the door...I doubt Charles Manson will ever get out of prison, but if he did and decided he wanted to buy a Yorkie, that pet shop owner can not refuse to sell it to him...
That may sound silly, but it is true.

I know I am emotional about this subject..but I want each one of you to look at your Yorkies, look into those beautiful trusting eyes..would you let someone pick a home for your Yorkie..could you sleep at night having no clue where your Yorkie is ..I couldn't. How any breeder can broker their pups is something I will never understand.
A pet shop does not check the buyer out..it is a place of business...a place to sell dogs, not screen buyers and eliminate the ones who have no business with a Yorkie.

I think the shop owner can set criteria for the purchaser just like a breeder selling from her home can. As long as they do not discriminate and they treat everyone the same with respect to the qualifications they are perfectly free to do so. I think the legalities are the same whether you sell from your home or some other location.

Thank you, Pat! As I said in my PM, I can always count on you to be the voice of reason. Even IF I DIDN'T LIKE A DOG, I COULD NOT TURN IT OVER TO SOMEBODY ELSE TO FIND A NEW HOME FOR! I know rescues are the best we can do sometimes, and thank goodness for them. They are not what I mean..

Default pups

No one tells me who to place my Yorkies with..I have told hundreds of people to look elsewhere. I have never said no to a person because of race, religion, or sex..but if I do not like the way you interact with my pups, you are dead in the water. If you do not have a good vet reference, look elsewhere..on and on..the breeders I know turn away more people then sell to them. I do not have to like you to sell you my house or my car, but my dogs are not in the same catagory..lots of people have gotten mad, a few have mad threats..what court would take my pup and give it to the person I turned away?..they would have to put me in jail.!
AND you think I am picky..try getting one of Whispersmom's babies. LOL

See post #6 in this very thread by "ingallsra" whose friends own a pet store where she got hers and she said they turn people down all the time. I think yiu just have to pick the right pet store just like yiu have to pick the right breeder. They ahve to care about the puppies and what is best for the and it can't be all about the money.

I think the most important thing in this whole thread is that you are 100% percent happy and that your lil baby is healthy. I am very happy for you and wish you much happiness with saffron. I dont believe in buying from petshops but there is always exceptions to every rule. I dont care for the bigger petshops, but i agree maybe some of these smaller shops are people who care more about where the pups come from. Either way you should not have to feel you need to defend where you bought your puppy. I said before sometimes its not us that picks the puppy sometimes i think they pick us

I agree... I am sure Saffron is a doll and it sounds like you had a great experience in buying him from your petstore. It's so nice to hear a success story Do you have any pictures to share? We love pictures

I also would like to mention to YorkieRose and Whispersmom2 that I admire you for your ethics. So many times we talk about petstores and mills and neglect to commend breeders like the both of you. Thank you for sharing your experience with us and giving us an insight to the heart of a reputable breeder.

How many of us can stand to take our babies to a groomer who will let them sit in a kennel ALL day long -- or even for 1/2 of a day? From what I've read here on this forum, most members are very particular and try to locate a groomer that can either come to their house or one that works on one dog at a time so that their babies don't have to be in a kennel for any duration.

If I am going to feel that way about my baby after he is in my possession, you better believe that I'm going to feel that way about where he was living before I got him.

Have any of your babies come back from the groomer and is not like they were (emotionally) prior to their visit because they were held for a period of time in a kennel? Just think about those that are treated that way from the day they are born or for the several weeks it may take to sell them at a pet store!

No thanks -- no pet stores for me. While Saffron may be an exception to the rule . . . the rule is enough to scare me!

I bought my first dog from a petstore. I was SOOOOOO Stupid. I paid $899 for a min pin!!!!!! At a petstore. Its rediculous what they charge. I didnt know better at the time. I also didnt know the bad condition dogs are in. This dog was supposedly from a championship bloodline. well for starters it tipped the scales at 23 lbs once full grown and there wasnt an ounce of fat on that dog- it was just incredibly large for the breed(standard is 6-10 lbs!!!!!). CRAZY DOG TOOO. I know its part of min pin mentality but I am seriously not sure about its genes. I ended up giving that dog to a friend who just loves it because it did not get along at all with my other dogs. It was the most expensive dog I bought too. The sad thing is that these types of breeds always end up in shelters and I paid $900 for one. I could have just rescued one that needed a family but nooooo Stupid petstore
We like to buy from breeders now. Its nice to see the conditions the dogs are raised in and the parents.

Actually, my puppies do fine in kennels/crates because the are used to them--thanks to the store where I bought them. They aren't in them often at my house, but due to traveling or the groomer's, I am glad that they are accustumed to them--not to mention it's less stress on the groomer if my dog is well-behaved while being housed there.
Many people preach the importance of crate training very young puppies, yet we denegrate the mom and pop stores for housing them in a similar environment. Yes, for different reasons usually...but I don't want to get into splitting hairs... My youngest puppy still spends nights in a small crate for his safety.
Because of my friends who own their own store, my puppies have been socialized to a variety of people and other puppies. I agree with the initial post that not all pet stores are bad. Many are, but not all. If someone wants to disagree with that, then that's their decision. But why not support the really good pet stores instead of condemning them all? That would have just as much of an effect on the puppy mills. Not to mention we should all be supportive of each other regardless of where we bought our dogs. Most of us here have the best of intentions and love our babies very much--let's be respectful of each other.
I, along with many here, will never patronize a store I feel is bad. I don't think martym112 would either. She made a valid point about constantly having to defend herself--and some of the responses on here are proving it.
Martym112, I'm right with you. I am all for getting your puppy from wherever you feel comfortable, and where you know it has been well taken care of.
