| HELP! Luna is scooting A LOT! We took Luna to the vet on Friday and had her anal glands, I guess you would say, secreted?? because she had been scooting a lot after going poo. But just right now, for the first time, I heard her cry while trying to go poo, then she proceeded to scoot a lot... she drag her bottom across the floor for longer than usual. The vet told me to keep an eye out for tapeworm in her poo. I'm not really sure what to do, I don't see anything in her poo that seems white and swiggly like the vet said. Has anyone experienced anything similar with their yorkies? Thanks in advance for any adivce or suggestions!

| Bradley was doing that one day for a few hours and crying and my mom kept telling me he had to go to the bathroom and to keep taking him out and make sure he went poo. Well to find out that he had poo stuck to his butt in his hair lol, so mom started to shave his butt. Atleast that is what was wrong with him and he hasnt done it since.

| Mojo rubed huis butt on the floor a couple times, took him to the vet, looked normal and i have not seen it happen again. Did u take a good look at her "behind"? Does it look swolen or irritaded? Did she just get trimmed? If the vet suspects tapeworm, wouldn;t it easier getting a fecal exam than looking at his poo??? |

| Babbie that is what I thought! I think I'm going to switch vets, she doesn't seem to be much help... she goes in and out pretty fast and doesn't say much. I'm really not that happy with her. I'm going to check her butt more often, I do remember when she was smaller she would cry and then I'd see the poo hanging from her behind. But we'll see, I will do what you all have suggested. Thanks so much!

| Hercules likes to scoot his butt on the floor randomly, not necessarily after he goes to the bathroom. Is that bad or something that I should ask the vet about?? He doesn't cry or anything when he goes to the bathroom. I thought maybe he just had an itch or something. Now I'm worried that it could be something more. |

| Also if u got het groomed not too long ago, it could also be a reaction to the blade. And i know cases where they groomer did not properly clean their utensils and a dog got a little skin infection...so u also have to consider that. |

| Nope, Luna hasn't got groomed at all. So it can't be that. I do remember that she had been scooting about 3 weeks ago, but not as much as now. I always thought it was a puppy thing...it got more frequent so I told the vet. Then I noticed today that she was going poo then crying a bit, oh and she always poos in segments for some reason. She does a little bit here moves to another spot and finishes her business there. not sure what that could mean...

| If Luna wasn't crying when she went poop before, maybe her little gland is bruised. Toto didn't go poop for about two days after going to the groomer once and the vet said if the anal gland wasn't expressed properly it is possible to bruise it ... I would think that would probably be painful? Also, a fecal sample would be a lot more accurate to check for worms than "watch the poop" ... maybe a more knowledgeable vet is in order? Poor baby ... hope she is better soon. Puppy kisses from Toto!

| Well, the vet was pretty good with Luna's, so now that Luna is done with them I can switch vets. My neighbor says that her vet is super generous and has been going there for years, I may go to that one. About the scooting, it could be bruised like you all said, but she got her anal glands squeezed like 3 days ago...so I have no idea. I will let you all know how the scooting situation is, thank you all for your help!

| Yeah,Luna gets a little nervous at the vet, at first, but I always make sure to take her favorite toy and some treats so that she gets use to going. She even gets playful on the counter/bed where they put her. You can see her little tail wagging and all... I think it's only a matter of time and making it a positive experience for your doggies. You should be careful with the anal glands because I heard its more of an issue in small dogs, like our yorkies(which is why I posted here). Try to get your yorkies accustomed to going with treats and stuff... just a suggestion

| That's why i never did nor will i let anybody but my vet express my dog's anal gland. It's not needed all the time and if not done properly it will cause problems, i would suggest the same, only do as oriented by your vet. Last edited by Babbie; 12-15-2004 at 11:36 AM. |

| Maddie does it too. I too her to the vet thinking her anal gland needed cleaning and it hardley had anything in it. With the weather changing Doc said with all the pollan in the air that it gets into there system and if they have any allergies it can cause them to scoot on ther butts just because they itch. Maddie was also bitting on her feet. She got , I call it a itch shot. This is the first time she has had to get it, but she has stopped scratching and scooting. At first I thought she might have got a flea on her, but I bath her every week and I never see any. The week I took her for the shot I bathed here tow times that week. Maybe ask your vet if allergies could cause it.........Cindy |

| I had to express my Pekenese's anal gland all the time! She got an infection, and after that I had to do it. I read where some Yorkies need to have them expressed and some don't. I asked my vet, and she said it usually expels when they poop. If they scoot and keep it up for a couple days, then they should be expelled. I am trying not to do Snoodles because then I am afraid it will be a constant thing. She will scoot at times, but then it stops! Hope it continues! As for pooping in segments, mine does the same thing! I think she thinks she is done, and oops! need to do some more. I notice if it is really cold out, she gets done a lot faster. Also, it isn't as often since she is a little older now. Pat |

| anal gland impaction My Yorkie, Reagan, had a scooting problem and it was recommended by a friend that I take him to the vet. He had an impacted anal gland which was expressed by the vet and he was put on antibiotics. This is a problem that should be taken care of. I found the following links online for more information: docarebasics.com healthypet.com sidyboysfoolin.com vetinfo.com Good luck to all of above! |
