Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Large breed to Yorkie I used to have a large breed dog and I am considering getting a yorkie. I just wondered if anyone else in here went from a larger breed to a yorkie and loves it or regrets it. There are alot more pros then cons about getting a smaller breed. Share you story! Thanks! |

| I did! I have always had a large breed dog in my life, from goldens, to labs, to shar-peis, to my current australian shepherds. I have always wanted a yorkie though, and I finally got one, and it was the best choice of my life! What you'll probably find if you get a yorkie is that you'll love him/her differently than you've ever loved oneof your big dogs. Yorkies are such babies, and your life will definitely change once you get one. They aren't for everyone though, so its good that you're doing your research. What kind of dog did you have before this?

| I did! I had a lab/golden retriever for 13 years, and then when I lost her I was brokenhearted. I got a yorkie because I wanted a very different dog than my baby that died........and boy are Yorkies different than Labs/Goldens. Both beautiful dogs, in different ways. You can't lay on a yorkie and hug him/her, but they can lay on you. I am very happy with having a little dog, and don't have any regrets at all...... |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | thanks for the quick reply My mother has two yorkies. I only spent time with them on visits. But I thought they had BIG personalities, were playful and just a ball of fun! My rottweiler, Brandy, recently passed away. She was pretty mellow in the last years of her life. Very affectionite and social. So it is really important to me that my yorkie spend alot of time around people and family to remain social and not too yippy. I loved playing with my big dog and tug of war was really a tug of war. I am very excited but at the same time I wonder what the difference will be? I have read a couple people write that it was the best decision! SO that assures me as well! I will be getting her at 8 months so I think she will be in a very playful stage! Thanks! |

| In the past I had a beagle/basset mix, a giant schnauzer mix, and an American bulldog. I loved them all but decided to go for a smaller dog this time, and one that doesn't shed! I didn't get Sugar as a baby so I'm not sure about the differences when they're babies, but Sugar is 3 years old and she's so much easier than the larger dogs I've had. My first - the beagle/basset mix - was a very mellow, well behaved dog who just followed me everywhere so she's tough to beat. Not having to sweep up dog hair all of the time is a huge improvement. Also, my last dog became aggressive so it's great to have a dog small enough to pick up if I want to get her out of a situation quickly. I love that my daughters (5 & 7) can walk her on a leash w/out getting dragged down the sidewalk. It is kind of weird to have to worry about people stepping on Sugar. When I take her anywhere w/ me I usually carry her so that I don't have to worry about her getting hurt. I love being able to take her to so many places that a larger dog would be harder to take. I am more cautious w/ her than I've ever been w/ a larger dog. I am totally sold on Yorkies and I'm actually thinking about getting a second one because I love them so much! They are addictive! Everyone who meets Sugar falls in love w/ her because she has such a sweet personality. I've had several friends say that their next dog will be a Yorkie even though they never thought they'd want to own an "ankle biter". Oh, and they aren't all yappers which was one of my main concerns before I adopted mine. Sugar rarely barks, except through the fence at the next door neighbor's dogs but my large dog did that also. Good luck w/ your decision.

| Aww, how cute! I love rotties! Such gorgeous animals. As much as I'd love to tell you all the great things about these little babies, its probably more important that you hear the negative issues, so that you can make a more informed decision. So honestly, yorkies are not known for being a very social breed. There are a select few that love meeting new people and being friendly, but most yorkies are a little shy with new people, and they're not very good with kids (more like kids are not very good with them). She will definitely be playful, and that is a great age to get her! She'll be past a lot of the puppy phases, and just ready for love!

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Big to little...lol.. I am the type of person that treats a dog like a horse and tie it up outside. I treat them like my own kids. I do not have kids. So believe me when I say that my Rottie was spoiled Rotten! And in her older days she just layed around alot. My house has not been the same since she passed and I think the pitter patter of lil puppy feet will be a ray of sunshine that I need these days. I am committed to the lifetime of this dog so I want to make sure that I have given it 100% thought. I feel like this is a huge decision and I just wanted to get different perspectives from people who have done the same. It will be an adjustment but I think of all the benefits a smaller dog has and the whole no shedding thing alone! I think with all the dog hair that my dog left behind I could have made 3 yorkies! |

| Ive had yorkies since i was 16 years old, the last one we had back then, passed in 2003. A year later we got a choc lab, i took her to training classes, and potty training her was a total breeze!! She never ever chewed on anything, and what a blast to have around, but i missed that certain something which is hard to explain. When she was 9 months old, we got our yorkies, all 3 are girls, and all 3 are equally spoiled, yet i love her differently to my yorkies. Yorkies, stay babies no matter what age, and i guess, i need that in my life. |

| We have 2 yorkie boys and a Rottweiler. They get along just great. So I guess you could say we have the best of both worlds.

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | best of both worlds That is sweet! However did you get them aquainted? A friend sent me some Youtubes of Rotties playing with Yorkies and it made me smile! I could not believe how the rottie was running away from the yorkie!!! It just reminded me of how gentle they can be in the right homes! |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk, there's a lot of wonderful people here to get to know. I'm so sorry for your loss of Brandy. My first dog when I was 7 was a St Bernard. Then we had Rough Collies & my mom always had Cockers (her grandmother raised them). My first small dog was a Maltese (my Jack RIP) that I got when my daughter started college & after that we started with Yorkies. We have 3 and it's grand.
