In the past I had a beagle/basset mix, a giant schnauzer mix, and an American bulldog. I loved them all but decided to go for a smaller dog this time, and one that doesn't shed! I didn't get Sugar as a baby so I'm not sure about the differences when they're babies, but Sugar is 3 years old and she's so much easier than the larger dogs I've had. My first - the beagle/basset mix - was a very mellow, well behaved dog who just followed me everywhere so she's tough to beat. Not having to sweep up dog hair all of the time is a huge improvement. Also, my last dog became aggressive so it's great to have a dog small enough to pick up if I want to get her out of a situation quickly. I love that my daughters (5 & 7) can walk her on a leash w/out getting dragged down the sidewalk. It is kind of weird to have to worry about people stepping on Sugar. When I take her anywhere w/ me I usually carry her so that I don't have to worry about her getting hurt. I love being able to take her to so many places that a larger dog would be harder to take. I am more cautious w/ her than I've ever been w/ a larger dog. I am totally sold on Yorkies and I'm actually thinking about getting a second one because I love them so much! They are addictive! Everyone who meets Sugar falls in love w/ her because she has such a sweet personality. I've had several friends say that their next dog will be a Yorkie even though they never thought they'd want to own an "ankle biter". Oh, and they aren't all yappers which was one of my main concerns before I adopted mine. Sugar rarely barks, except through the fence at the next door neighbor's dogs but my large dog did that also. Good luck w/ your decision.
