True, but their is a big difference in a 'pet quality' only dog and a dog that was ill bred without standard being followed. It's the latter of the two that are ruining the breed.

You can't learn if you don't ask. I think it's awesome you're doing your research. I have heard that a lot of show breeders won't sell to someone that doesn't show, but I've also heard that some will...I think it all depends on getting to know the breeder and your purpose to breeding their dog.

Just out of curiosity, and correct me if I'm wrong...but isn't your dog only 3 months old? How do you know at this point if he meets the standard...he isn't an adult yet? That's not to say he doesn't, just that if you have figured out a way to make that determination by 3 months, I'd love to be let in on your secret.

Okay..again, I never said you couldn't breed if you didn't show and that you don't know the standard. I said that the dog should at least be evaluated by show breeders and judges to make sure the dog is of quality to breed. Don't you think it would be better to have 3-4 knowledgeable people telling you your dog is of quality to breed, rather than just go off your sole opinion?

As for your statement,"...ill bred without standard being followed. It's the latter of the two that are ruining the breed."....well,I guess Livi can be your poster dog for the ones that are "ruining the breed". Last edited by TammyJM; 09-19-2007 at 06:26 PM. | |

I think there might be a few people who have been hurt in the past by some strong comments others have made so they feel a little on the defensive side in this post.... the point of yt is to ask questions and hopefully people will answer (whatever their opinion may be) in a kind way...

In a perfect world, a show quality yorkie would be great to start out with. In the real world it isnt likely to happen. Like I said in the last thread that got closed with my comment, show breeders arent going to sell you their breeding stock. It is like being between a rock and a hard place. My advice is to get the best dogs you can possibly afford and start there. Not all show breeders started with perfect show dogs I am sure. If they did, then I would say they were lucky and the exception to the rule and not the rule.
