It doesn't state that, but when the original standard was written it was describing the adult yorkie....too much open for interpretation.....more judges education is needed or more breeder/judges would be preferable, they are becoming a rareity.

Agreed...that's why judges really need to be educated on this new DQ and so do exhibitors alike. Interpretation will always play a part unfortunately as it does even before the DQ was applied. | |

| ![]() Would your statement be safe to say, for showing only? I am not sure how it worked with the Parti Yorkies that did not fit the standard but the AKC recognizes they are Yorkies and allows them to be registered.

The Standard is the Standard for all yorkies. Yes, the Parti can be AKC registered, there is an option on the registration that address colors that are not mentioned on the front of the registration form.

| ![]() wow...this thread IS very educational... I thought my Shayley was black and gold but at almost two years old now, I am noticing her black turning to a very dark blue. It started at before her tail is progressing into the "new growth" up her body as it is growing in. I thought by now she would stay her colors but??? Until what age generally do they change in color? ![]()

| ![]() Depending on where you got your puppy, sometimes un-educated breeders will put black and gold on the papers as they are all black and gold at birth. Maybe they think that some are born blue and gold??? Lynn |

| ![]() I think everyone who wants to breed or purchas a Yorkie should read the color info on the goldenray yorkies web-site. That is one of the most informative article on color genitics I have seen. I think it will be very educational to the designer color breeders as well. FYI Lynn |

The study of Genetics has come a long way in just the last 10 years, and if someone truly wants to learn about current coat color and recessive gene information, I suggest visiting some of the more updated sites, particularly the vet school sites, like UC Davis Veterinary lab. I've contacted vets at this lab and Virginia Tec Vet school (Philip Sponenberg, DVM, PhD, specifically) and everyone has been very kind to answer my genetics questions. One of the best internet sites is done by Sue Ann Bowling Ph.D.. Here's a link to the site: http://bowlingsite.mcf.com/Genetics/Genetics.html So thank you for the suggestion of checking out the Goldenray site but I prefer visiting the Vet School sites and the Bowling site for my educational information. :-)

Lynn, Let me start off with being a yorkie snob and a color pureist, I totally agree with you. Cher Hildabrand's website is a wealth of information, she's been around for along time and has emersed herself in the breed, continousely studying, involved in the study of genetics, backs reseach studies.....etc. We both could argue this point until we are blue in the face and it'll will get us nowhere. You, I and others like us can only do what we do to preserve the breed. We can't save the world. Mary

| ![]() Mercedes is golden with white markings that aren't real noticeable. AKC marked her coloring as "TAN" only (after pictures of her were reviewed and accepted by the AKC board). |
