| ear infection and a few training ? (fyi long ?) My 10 mo Yorkie is also my first dog. I did not notice he had ear infections. He scratched a lot and I'd check him for fleas but no redness or smell. My groomer pointed it out to me and I felt really bad. We never trained his ears up. Does this make him prone to infection? Also what is everyone's opinion on doggie doors? It's starting to get cold here in New England and I can't keep the door ajar. He will take himself out but the common problem of never telling me he has to go. If the door is shut i'll just find a puddle. I have 3 small kids so no bells please! O.K. The big question. He will not come to me at all. We have trained Buddy since we had him and he is very good. He seems to not like his harness or being put on a lead. I now keep his harness on all the time and have been training with treats to come as a game and also because I need him to come to me so I can put him on a lead or in his crate when i go out. I am suspicious he knows this will happen and will not come to me now AT ALL ..EVER! I've even upped the anti with steak and chicken! We had a trainer come and have been working with a 30 ft. lead to let him roam and then we can tug him if he hesitates or is distracted. It seemed to make it worse. We give him plenty of play and affection time also. If he does come while on the training lead it is turtle slow and sulky the whole way. I try to stay positive and reward and praise but I don't think i am getting anywhere. Any new ideas/?? I have to have one of my kids corral him to me in order for him to come to me..This takes up to 20 min or so. HELP!!! Oh also is this weird..if he is on his way to me and I say good boy or yes he stops and turns around. It's like he doesn't like praise either! Last edited by buddyqu; 09-16-2007 at 09:29 AM. |

| Hi, welcome to YT. Yes, dogs with floppy ears are more prone to infections. The air can't get in there as well to keep them dry. I'm not a fan of doggie doors because I feel it is too dangerous for small dogs to be outside unattended. Too many stories of them being attacked by animals or stolen by humans. I don't really have any great suggestions for teaching him to come to you but at this point I would only call him to you for something he enjoys. When you want him for anything he doesn't like, go get him. Does he stay when commanded? When training you want it to be fun when they obey not what they would consider punishment (lead or crate for him). Hopefully, someone will have more helpful suggestions. Best of luck.

| Penny wouldn't come at first either, so I kept her halter and a small leash on her all the time. This way I could atleast get the leash if I couldn't get her. She picked up really fast, because she gets a treat whenever she comes. Now we're working on stay, which I think is a really important command.

| Lucky my golden is the first floopy eared dog I have ever had to get ear infections (Left ear only). I got him from the breeder and he had one which the breeder told me about and he was already being treated with vet. supervision. Note he was the only one in a litter of 15 with one. He has had ear infections ever since which has been almost 10 years. He has very narrow canals and no hair instead of his ears to keep the bacteria and debris out. He loves the attention he gets when he gets his ears tended to. If I take out cotton balls and sit on the floor he will come over and put his head on my lap to have them cleaned. My vet. says that some dogs are much more prone to ear infections than other. Lucky only gets infections of his Left ear and never his right. Cozy my yorkie 18 months has yet to ever have on. Knock on wood. I look in her ears every day and put some ear powder in them once a week but that is really it for her ear care. Cozy has very hairy ear canals. Growing up my family had a Bichon- Hairy canals and zero infections. My mother had dauscaunds and cocker spaniels as a kid and they never had ear infections either. Good luck with your baby's ear infection.

| Some dogs are slower to learn commands than others. Lucky my golden is a people pleaser if you say jump is says "How high." Cozy on the other hand is a little on the stubborn side. Pratience and persists. Try and keep the training sections short and sweet and slowly work up to longer sessions. If is takes you a long time to corral your baby. He probably thinks you are playing a game. Cozy loves to be chased after but don't want you to leave her. When it is time to go inside the house I say "Inside" and then go to the house and inside I go. She follows 99.9% of the time. When I first got Cozy she was a runner, the breeder was a free spirit who let her dogs do whatever they wanted so none of her dogs would come to her. Cozy thought it was a game. She would run away from me and then play bow and bark. It took a while for Cozy to learn to come when called. For weeks whenever she was outside she was attached to long lead (I used thin string so it was not heavy) that she would drag behind her. When it was time to go inside I would say "Inside" and walk away. If she did not follow I would grab the lead and say "Come Cozy" and gently pull on the string as soon as she started to come to me I would get out food from my pocket to give to her and say "good girl". She loves nuts so that was her weakness. She has to work for "good girl." Maybe there is a toy your dog loves that toy could be the reward for coming to you.
