Question Buy from a backyard breeder?

I've been searching to find the Yorkie of my dreams, and so far this week, there's been 2 heartbreaks for me I was 90% committed to purchasing a wonderful little boy here from Ksbiewers. But the more I thought about it, the more I was worried about having him shipped from Kansas to Canada. Not only was I worred about how he would handle flight, but I was also worried about possibly running into problems with customs or crossing the border. It broke my heart, but I decided to let him go and search for a local breeder.

I found some listings in my local area. It's pretty much like an online classified ad. I wasn't planning on purchasing from them, as most of them seem to be backyard breeders. But my sister and I just wanted to go take a look at what were going to eventually be getting. The first male puppy we saw was a darling, and it was super hard to leave without taking him home with us. But I thought that $1500 was way too much for an unregistered Yorkie that came from a backyard breeder. She also seemed to care more about getting rid of the puppy as soon as possible rather than finding it the right home

We then went and looked at a second puppy. There was a boy and a girl, and although we had planned on seeing the boy, the girl immediately caught mine and my sister's attention. We pretty much fell in love with her as soon as we held her in our arms. The problem was though, the couple selling her seemed pretty sketchy. It was a very young couple, both really nice and polite, but both didn't seem like the type of people who could properly raise a litter of puppies. The parents were there, but were kept in the backyard. My mind tells me to stay away from these "breeders" who just had their first litter. But my eyes and my heart are telling me take her home with me right now! lol. I went to bed thinking about the precious little girl, I dreamed about her all night, and I woke up this morning thinking about her some more!

I'm very torn right now...my mind is telling me to wait and find a reputable breeder, but I absolutely fell in love with this baby doll! Do I need to have some sense knocked into me, or should I just follow my heart in this situation? Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated

Do the mom & dad look like their in good condition? Are they registered? You can ask to see a copy of the moms & dads paper to see what the line is like. Did you see where they keep the puppies. I would ask to see to check if it's clean. If they pass all your tests I wouldn't hesitate just because it's their first litter.

I'm almost afraid to answer this for fear I'll anger someone. If I were you I would wait until I felt completely comfortable with the breeder. I'm sure the puppy you saw was adorable and lovable, but you will find one that is also adorable and lovable from a breeder that you trust. Good luck.

I wouldn't do it. I worry about the health of the puppy, which is often compromised by "breeders" just trying to make money. If your puppy dies within the first year, or inherits a genetic disorder, you will be more heartbroken than you are now.

If you did get one from Pam at Ksbiewers.....
You'd be very happy.
My Gizmo is from her.
Good luck with your search.

I agree. Best of luck to you with whatever you decide.

Neither parents or puppies are registered, the couple said it was too expensive and not necessary The puppies had their shots and dewormed and they have the records. The mom & dad were rather sweet, they looked like they needed a little grooming, but other than that, they were friendly and never even barked. I'm just worried about the puppy's health and how it was cared for. The couple lives in a really shady part of town (you don't want to walk around alone at night), and I think the wife was a stripper She told me she was heading to work for her night shift, which her husband added saying she works at the hospital. Who works at a hospital wearing 4-5 inch heels and an outfit that barely covers your bum? There were several red flags here, but then I thought that I maybe I'm being too judgemental? They did wait until the puppies were 12 weeks old to let them go, and the parents seemed pretty well behaved.

What if you picked up the puppy from Pam at Ksbiewers in person, and flew back with him? That way he wouldn't be alone during the flight, and if there was trouble with customs or crossing the border, at least he'd be with you.

Will they offer you a health guarantee? Mybe you could tell them that your concern for the puppy's health is holding you back, but a health guarantee would make you more secure.

Pam (ksbiewers) and I have talked about this and we TOTALLY understand. It is always a risk to put the babies in cargo. She told me that you had checked into flying in to pick up Peeps and it was expensive. (Did you try a date farther away?) Then of course there is always customs and your tariff. We will be following your progress in getting your special puppy! Good luck finding the baby that you feel comfortable with, I know he is out there!!! If there is anything we can do to help, just let us know.

I don't know what to say, puppies that come from backyard breeders are like a lottery. I bought Bengi from one, I didn't do my homework and I didn't know YT back then. Bengi came up a very healthy 5 lb boy, but I would buy from somebody like him again; next time things might not be this way... If you are willing to take risks, maybe you can go for it... but I don't know if I would...

Honestly, I would wait. It's not just the condition of the puppies that you have to worry about. How do you know that the parents of those puppies don't carry genetic diseases/defects...Even if they are healthy, it doesn't they don't carry the gene for liver shunt or something like that. Maybe I'm paranoid, but I would rather buy from an experienced breeder who knows a lot about her lines. Liver shunt CAN come happen to a reputable breeder too because it's impossible to check for the gene, BUT the difference is that a reputable breeder will stand behind her pups...If your pup gets sick, she's not going to ask for him back just to put him down and give you another one. They will help you through it, in my opinion.

Speaking from a breeder's perspective, I am more worried if the people that are taking one of my babies home will provide a good home for them than any amount of money (we've turned down a $10k offer on one of our puppies from a previous littler - we felt the person was more interested in having a Yorkie to show off then the actual Yorkie herself). A healthy environment is more important to me than any amount of money. I had to turn down quite a few people when we had our last litter because I didn't feel thier situation was right.

Also as a buyer, I don't think you should purchase a puppy from a breeder that you don't feel comfortable with. There is usually a very valid reason for this discomfort and if the puppy has problems, you'll always second guess your choice. It goes both ways in MHO.

Registration too expensive? I don't believe that line for a second. Registation is only a few dollars and any breeder should be willing to show proof of registration.

Good luck finding your baby.

Adalaid Lane just had her first litter last night. We expected four (according to the xray) and she ending up having five. All healthy. Three girls and two boys. One is already spoken for. She did very well and took to being a mom right away - cleaning and tending to her babies without hesitation. I'm so proud of her.

As another breeder, I also agree with everything that has been posted here. Please do not buy from a person you are uncomfortable with. Like the person that has posted right above me, i have one little girl left and turned down at least six people for various reasons. My baby's new home is more important to me than any amount of money they offer. Flying a puppy is a very scary thing. i have only flown one alone and I was worried half to death. my husband, on the other hand, has flown a hundred or more Beagles and never had a problem so it doesn't bother him at all. There are one or two breeders on here that live in Canada. Why not post a question and ask if anyone knows of any breeders in Canada?
