Default Backyard breeder

I would be very concerned with a breeder that didn't care more for the puppies than the money. I just had my forth litter and use an extensive application to make sure the puppies get the best placement. I turned down 19 people based on the application and sold the last puppy cheap to neighbors across the street from me. I have know them for 10 years and they decided it was time to get a dog. It was a win/win sale! I get to watch Scooter grow and babysit him when they need it. I will be his groomer and Grandma forever I hope!

I have three of my puppies living in my neighborhood - so much for letting them go

I would worry about any breeder that doesn't love the puppies more than the money!!!
I breed because I love Yorkies and health, registration with AKC and follow up should be a must for all Yorkie breeders.

Wait for the right feeling about the breeder it is well worth it!

I've been searching to find the Yorkie of my dreams, and so far this week, there's been 2 heartbreaks for me I was 90% committed to purchasing a wonderful little boy here from Ksbiewers. But the more I thought about it, the more I was worried about having him shipped from Kansas to Canada. Not only was I worred about how he would handle flight, but I was also worried about possibly running into problems with customs or crossing the border. It broke my heart, but I decided to let him go and search for a local breeder.

I found some listings in my local area. It's pretty much like an online classified ad. I wasn't planning on purchasing from them, as most of them seem to be backyard breeders. But my sister and I just wanted to go take a look at what were going to eventually be getting. The first male puppy we saw was a darling, and it was super hard to leave without taking him home with us. But I thought that $1500 was way too much for an unregistered Yorkie that came from a backyard breeder. She also seemed to care more about getting rid of the puppy as soon as possible rather than finding it the right home

We then went and looked at a second puppy. There was a boy and a girl, and although we had planned on seeing the boy, the girl immediately caught mine and my sister's attention. We pretty much fell in love with her as soon as we held her in our arms. The problem was though, the couple selling her seemed pretty sketchy. It was a very young couple, both really nice and polite, but both didn't seem like the type of people who could properly raise a litter of puppies. The parents were there, but were kept in the backyard. My mind tells me to stay away from these "breeders" who just had their first litter. But my eyes and my heart are telling me take her home with me right now! lol. I went to bed thinking about the precious little girl, I dreamed about her all night, and I woke up this morning thinking about her some more!

I'm very torn right now...my mind is telling me to wait and find a reputable breeder, but I absolutely fell in love with this baby doll! Do I need to have some sense knocked into me, or should I just follow my heart in this situation? Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated

I think you should call the Canadian Kennel Club and see if they can refer you to a responsible breeder. You want to buy a healthy baby so my suggestion is to stay away from backyard breeders.

Don't settle for a puppy from a backyard breeder. Most people buy from backyard breeders because they don't know any better and either get lucky with the puppy they buy or unlucky...like someone said it's like the lottery. Backyard breeders just breed as a hobby and to make money - they don't do health testing or even care much about where the puppies end up. You are fortunate enough to be educated about reputable and unreputable breeders, and I think you having to even ask about buying a puppy from these people shows that your head is telling you that these are not the right breeders to buy from. When you find the right breeders, I think you will know that it is right. I know you're worried about shipping your puppy, and yes, bad things can happen, but so many puppies are shipped each day that I think everything will be fine. I would much rather buy from a reputable breeder that you trust and have it shipped then buy from a local backyard breeder that you don't think you can really trust. I would go with your first choice of breeder (ksbiewer) if that was who you liked and find out exactly what you need to do to have your puppy shipped with no problems.

Ask if you can take the pup to the vet first before committing to a purchase. That will ease your mind if the vet says the pup is healthy. Also take it to YOUR vet, not theirs. I bought my pups from a breeder. I was sooooo ignorant about lots of things when I bought them. Her vet said they were healthy (and they were for the most part) but once they had a visit to my vet i found out one had a heart murmur. I don't know how her vet could have missed it. It closed up and went away when he was a year old... but still... so just make sure you bring the pup to your vet.

We will be following your progress in getting your special puppy! Good luck finding the baby that you feel comfortable with, I know he is out there!!! I first date I looked at was somewhere around $325 each way, and then I noticed that they had cheaper dates and the lowest I found was about $120 each way, but then when I went to add up the total costs, there were a bunch of other fees and charges and it ended up being close to $400, and I think it's another $100 or so on top of that to have the puppy in the cabin. The total costs in the end would be going way over my budget Thank you so much for the support though, and I hope I find a baby just as precious as Peeps!

Thank you for everybody's thoughts and suggestions! I have decided to not take the big risk of buying from that young couple. I'm going to wait until I find a breeder that I am comfortable and confident with. I appreciate all the good wishes and I will keep you all posted once I find the baby of my dreams

If your gut is telling you no or that it isn't a good idea, it ISN'T! (In all aspects of life...learned that with my last BF ) It is sooo easy to follow your heart, but if there is one speck of doubt or reservation I would wait, because your perfect baby is waiting for you!

The more you say about them the more I think I'd walk away. There are so many great breeders on here. I'd try one of them. You might have to wait a while, but it would be worth it. We also have the Yorkie Railroad. If you find a furbaby you love that's not near where you live we organize people to get it to you.

Where in Canada are you? I am in Canada and perhaps can refer you to someone reputable.

I think you are making a good decision in waiting. BYB's are always a gamble and when you meet the right breeder you will just know it is right

I'm in Kitchener, about an hour away from Toronto. I'd be willing to take up to a 4 hour drive though. Let me know if you know anybody. Thanks so much!

I wouldn't buy from a breeder than I didn't feel comfortable with. It's better to wait or maybe see if you can fly to meet the breeder that you trust.

The Yorkie Railroad? That sounds interesting, how does it work exactly?

My sister is a nurse. She does NOT wear heals of any kind. *laughing*

In fact - it's against her dress code to do so.

Um...if they will lie to you about that how could you trust what they say about the dogs?

AND - why buy an unregistered dog at a registered dog price?

I know you've gotten some great tips here.
