| ![]() Do you think it could have been because we just switched his food a few days ago? I think it may have been too sudden for him. We mixed it in with his old food, but he just kept picking out and eating the new stuff and leaving the other one in the dish. He was eating Eukanuba when we got him and now we're giving him Innova as well. He seems to like it a lot. I hope he's not sensitive to it. |

| ![]() We have been trying to pee pad train out little guy since we don't take him out that much especially because he doesn't have all of his booster shots yet and we pretty much live in doggy central. The vet and her technician told us yesterday that we should crate train instead though and that it's easier. Apparently we should leave him in the crate "all the time" except for when he is eating or going to the bathroom or playing with us. When he is supervised, we just leave the puppy gate open and he goes back and forth between his own "room" and the rest of the apartment. When he isn't supervised, we close the gate and he has everything he need in his area, with lots of room and he does fine. We were told that this is wrong and that he will just start peeing everywhere and not learn anything. We actually thought that he was doing pretty well. He has accidents of course, all the time actually, but he's so young and we thought it was normal. They told us to take him outside every 3 hours and right after he eats. That doesn't sound easier to me, LOL. Plus how can we take him out when we're sleeping at night or if we're away for more than 3 hours for whatever reason? We don't really feel comfortable leaving a little puppy in the crate for that long, but we really don't know anything about this since we never had a puppy before of our own other than the family dogs that our parents took care of ![]() I also read that toy dogs are hard to potty train and may have accidents throughout their lives. What does everyone think is a good idea? Crate training or pee pad training? ![]() Last edited by punkie; 08-03-2007 at 03:57 AM. Reason: double sentence |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | ![]() Milo, huh? Sounds like a good name to me. I didn't crate train, but from a lot of the posts I've seen, crating is primarily for sleeping. Is this right? Someone who's crated, please help here! ![]() I think the arrangement you've made is good. We left Ozzie gated in the kitchen with bed, toys, water, and papers when he couldn't be supervised. (Ozzie was VERY slow to potty train but a lot of it was MY fault because I didn't have a lot of time during his puppydom to make it work.) |

| ![]() We have been pee pad training our Eury because of where we live. Even if we take her outside, there isn't anywhere she can go like a grass plot. We have to walk two blocks for that and that's not very easy to do when she's really gotta go. Regarding the crate training for at night, we also use a pen for her at night and when we are out. It has her sleeping area (her travelling bag), food, water, toys and her pee pad. And we had no issues... in her pen, she uses her pad every time she has to go potty. As she gets older, she uses it less and less at night cause she can hold it longer and longer. One big plus to this, we can sleep through the night cause she has everything she needs. Being my hubby is military and getting up early is the norm, I can't tell you how wonderful this is! Now as to accidents, etc. Yeah Eury still has the occasional accident but she's also still a puppy at almost 5 months. Our vet said to expect accidents until she's about a year old and then only once in a while if she gets overly excited, nervous, etc. We hope that our next assignment allows us to have a place with a back yard though so she can enjoy that. Anyways, I hope all that helps. And I like Milo, it fits is cute face. ![]()

I just have to say...I have a little 5 lb rescue here right now and am amazed at what a tiny little thing he is. DH and I are both afraid of crushing him. 3 lbs is incredibly small...that being said, am I reading this right??? Did you decide to keep him???? Good luck whatever you do. ![]()

Sounds like you did the exact same thing with him that we're doing now. Glad to hear it works. I wasn't too keen on the idea of crating him all day and night. The vet tech said her dog is in the crate all day and all night unless he is eating, playing with his family or going to the bathroom. Seemed kind of excessive to me. But who am I to say? I'm clueless, LOL.

Good to hear it's working for you as well. He's still having accidents in his play area too ![]() He's starting to go into his carrier on his own lately to sleep, so that's a good thing. He hardly uses his actual bed anymore. I'm glad people seem to like the name Milo. I think it's really cute. Reminds me of that spunky Jack Russell from the movie The Mask ![]()

| ![]() Regarding blood/muscus in stool. I have tried to switch my baby to Innova but it did not work no matter how slow I've tried to do it. He was on rice/chicken diet and got better but the minute he eats Innova even a bit he starts to get loose stool with bloody muscus in it. I thought it's an allergy to chicken but it's not. He eats other foods with chicken fine. Then I thought it's barley, eggs etc. I still cannot pinpoint it. I tried all of them separately and he was fine. I got lost in exclusion process ![]() |
