I, myself, have unknowingly bought a puppy mill puppy and I feel unbelievably guilty about it. I did my research on Yorkies through reading books and talking to a friend who had had one but I was totally unaware of the existence of puppy mills until I joined YT. The information is not well known enough in the general public and people who have made the mistake of buying a pet shop puppy WITHOUT knowing about puppy mills should not be made to feel badly about it; it's a learning experience and now they can tell all their friends and families about it. While I agree with you that a puppy mill puppy is not a rescue in the sense that most people think of, I was wondering if you know what happens to pet store puppies if they are not bought? Are they euthanized? Are they given to shelters? Tucker was getting to be pretty old in terms of puppy shop talk and I wonder what would have happened had I not come along. I can't imagine life without him and I wouldn't trade him for the world. Would I buy from a pet shop again? Absolutely not but what's done is done and now I can inform others about the horrible practices of pet shops and puppy mills.

| I do agree with you. I did support a puppy mill myself because I did not know about them too. But I bought from a breeder. since I was a child I have known that buying a pet from pet store is NOT right. copy from another topic: Do you know how ANY business works? This is simple math. If store owner doesn't get profit from certain product, he/she will NOT buy same product again. Now. Imagine, you are a pet store owner and bought puppies from a broker. Broker bought them from a puppymiller at wholesale price. Everyone made a profit, except you so far. If you sell them, you make a profit, and want to buy again. If you do NOT sell them, will you send them back???!!! who will take them back and pay back?! they will not! If EVEN they take them back, who will pay for shipping? of course YOU !!! To put them on sleep costs money. To send them back costs money. Do you want to loose MORE money or will try to get rid of it asap by selling it for less and just return money you spent already? Just think about it. There is NO profit for anybody. I think, for those who know about pm and still want to "save" a pup from a pet store, maybe they should ask for a big discount? I mean not $100, way more that is NOT profitable for a store owner... Pet store people do afraid when customers know the true about their business. imagine, when during the day everyone will ask for discount because they know about pm, they afraid to buy a potential sick puppy, whatever. no one will like work that way....one day they may said "i am tired, it is not profitable for me" Last edited by omichka; 07-27-2007 at 07:48 AM. |

| Wow, no need to get nasty and condescending. I was simply explaining that I could understand why the poster coined her puppy a "rescue." I certainly did not mean to imply that we should run out to "rescue" puppies at pet stores which obviously would defeat the purpose of trying to do away with puppy mills. I understand the concept of business and supply and demand but this was not the issue I was addressing. I was trying to defend the poster who obviously feels badly about buying a puppy mill puppy from further shame and attack. It's nice that you knew from a young age that buying from a pet shop is not good practice, I, however, like many, was not that privileged. I'm glad that you are so passionate about this matter.

| I really do not think it is anyone's intention to be nasty or condecending. There are many wonderful people that unknowingly purchase puppies from pet stores every day. I believe the vast majority do not have a clue about puppy mills, ect. Our job is to try and educate as many people as we can- certainly not pass judgement on them. I do not believe it is their fault!! Once you know the story and are educated regarding this, I believe we as dog lovers, have a moral and ethical obligation to do whatever we can. Every conversation you have can have a huge impact. Lets all work together and support each other to put an end to this crime!

| Donating YT 2000 Club Member | I visited our new Petland to check it out & I think I pi##ed off the saleslady! I asked to see one of the yorkies that was now 1/2 price (was 1800.) she must work on commission-she said she couldn't understand why he was still there. I agreed he was adorable, but their prices were high, when you can get them from a breeder much more reasonable. She stated he was AKC-so I asked for his breeder's name so I could check him out-she said she didn't have it & that they get their puppies from Hunte Corp.-I proceeded to tell her that it was a puppy broker for puppy mills-the conversation went from bad to worse from there!! You all would've been so proud of me!! She then said they had credit approval if I wanted to fill out papers-I said I wasn't going to buy him & if I did, I would pay cash-she asked if I was going to ome back & gave me her card. They must work on commission!!!!!!

Stuff like that needs to be exposed and if more of the general public knew what was going on the mills would be shut down. its sad that their is not a nationwide effort on everyones part or a day set aside where we only focus on animal cruelty to get the information out in one shot..... | |
