| Pet Insurance ??? Hi there, I have a yorkie girl. She is 18 months, and she is healthy. I took her to the vet to have her rabies shot and just a general check up and the vet charged me $160.00 and he told me to come back in 2 weeks for other shots. The vet is nice but everytime when I ask him a question he doesn't answer it but changes a subject. Basically what he charged me for was a visit ($45), rabbies shot ($35), blood test ($35), and medications. When I go next time, he will charge me for the visit again and for 2 shots. Everytime when I go there he tells me to buy this and that, and I feel like he only cares about how much money he will make. I live in Chicago area, so I understand it can be more expensive, but how much people usually pay for vet visits. Also, I started looking at pet insurance. I was looking at the VPI and PetsMart Benfield insurances and I was wondering if anyone has any of those. I can't afford to go to the vet and pay so much money just for the shots, so couple of my friends recommended Benfield but I just want to here from you guys what do you think??? Is it worth it to have pet insurance ??? Thanks for all replies. |

Bella Boo & Diggy Too! Donating GS Member | Sounds high. I just had Diggy in for rabies shot Friday and it was 19 bucks. My total bill was 50. What meds is he prescribing and for what?? If he isnt answering your ?'s Id look for a new vet. In my opinion you should TOTALLY trust your vet and he should answer ANYTHING you ask. There are no stupid or wrong ?'s when it comes to your baby.

| I haven't given her hearworms medication that is why he made me do the test, and he never called me back to tell me if the test are ok or not. I bought 6 heargrear medications (those little squares) which was like $40, and I bought 1 Frontline flies and tick medication for $14.00; I looked those up on the net and I could have bought like 1 year supplie of both for the price I paid in his office. |

My friends said that at Banfield they pay sooo much less for the medications and visits are covered, and they follow up on the visits by calling and making sure the dog is ok. I just feel like my vet is ripping me off |

| I have the Banfield policy. I have saved a lot of money with it. They do not charge for office visits, and when Gypsy had kennel cough and then mites we were taken her every week. Esp when she had mites (I think that was what the were) she had to have dips every week for several weeks. It would have been outrageous for office visits alone. The paperwork shows you what it would be without and with the insurance and keeps a total of what you save. I love the vet we use. She really cares about the babies and not just the money. She has not charged me for some things every once in a while to help out. When my dtr took her furbaby the first time she told her not to do the insurance right off cause she was worried that Gremlin might not make it cause he had kennel cough and then let her get it at a reduced rate cause he was older.

| When I go to my vet, and I am getting shots, I am not charged a vet visit. But if I just walk in to have them check somehting out I am charged 35$... I would look into going to another vet. |

I have to start looking into this. We've spend a fortune in the last 2 years with Trixie's vet visits (allergy diagnoses and then mites). And we may not be done yet. How does pet insurance work? Do you have to go to certain vets that take the insurance - like human health insurance? We have a Banfield hospital in Portland so I assume they take Banfield pet insurance. Thanks!

| We looked onto Pet Insurance, and we called one company, but it wasn't what we were looking for. It wouldn't benefit Missy much. For the past two months, we've spent about $2000 on Missy. I'm just praying we don't have to come across something serious anymore. I am so thankful that a new Vet bought the hospital because the other two Vet's (both men) would charge us every visit, and some can easily have not been a charged visit. As for this new VET, seeing how we had some awful problem happen with Missy, he said we are welcome anytime to visit if we are worried, and he hasn't charged anything!! he'll probably only charge for a physical examination, but just harmless visits, he won't charge us. I absolutely love his kindness. I wish our pets can have OHIP as well, like us human. They should not be any dfiferent! lol. Last edited by Tina_Luvs_Missy; 07-22-2007 at 09:32 AM. |

| Someone who had pet insurance told me that the policy expires every year. That after a year you get issued a new policy "not renew" the old one. This makes everything a pre-existing condition after one year. If your pet had a serious problem,or something chronic like arthritis, it would only be covered for the remainder of the 1 yr policy, then be considered pre-existing when you went to buy your policy for the next year. I do not have pet insurance. this was passed on to me by an older couple in my vet's waiting room.

| amspoelstra: The Banfield policy is just for Banfield hospitals. It is more of a discount program rather than an insurance policy. I pd some up front then did not have to pay for her spay, or her shots. The office visits are free no matter how often I take her. Here is a link to the wellness plan: http://www.banfield.net/health/owp.asp click on the puppies or adult link at the top of the page it will tell you what is included.

I have VPI. I bought the premier plan that covers office visits and shots. I mainly bought it to help with the cost of their spays. It will only cover 65.00 toward each spay...I was hoping it would cover more. However, so far I have been very happy with it. I did post a breakdown of what I was charged (at the vets) and what was covered. If you search my posts (just right click my screen name and go to my posts) and you will find it. So far, I am not sorry that I bought it.

| Pet Insurance This is a sore spot with me. I really believe in the quest to provide the best vet care, the veterinary profession is pricing ordinary people out of having pets. I have had two dogs for the last 20 years and it is getting so bad that I think these two will be my last. I have a yorkie and a poolde and every time I walk in the door it is a $65 exam fee. Bloodwork now includes the test, a fee to analyze it and a fee to dispose of it for a cost of $120 every time they have bloodwork done. My minerature poodle now has heart disease which means $20 medication every 7 weeks, an echocardiagram at around $350 twice a year, xrays at $150 a pop, bloodwork and they both get teeth cleanings at close to $500 apiece just about every year now. Just like everything else, pets will eventually be only for the rich. No wonder people of ordinary means are abandoning their elderly pets to shelters. Sorry to vent, but that's how I'm beginning to feel. I work two jobs and right now one of them is practically devoted to vet bills. |

| I agree that those charges seem excessive. But then again, if I have an office visit with one of mine it seems I am charged for so many things that I think should be part of the profession. so much for the visit, so much for the shot, so much if they take the temperature, then an additional fee to dispose of the "waste"???? Geeez, I will throw them away myself for what they charge. I guess I should show you one of my favorite pictures
