Default 2 years of looking

i think that for me i found the breeders did care alot for the pups and screened me to make sure i could adopt one of their dogs, i just felt like it was one way. i wanted to go see the babies and make sure it was the baby for me, but there is such a high demand for them its almost like breeders i talked to make ya feel like if you dont act now you will never get a yorkie and if i passed their test i could take the one they thought was best for my family. none ever made me feel like i couldnt go see the puppy but usually they wanted me to pay a deposit first and then go meet it. waiting lists grrrrrrr. lol

Congrats on Oliver..I cant wait to see pictures of him!! I bet he is a real doll..I LOVE his name too...so perfect!! You sounds so excited and I can see why!! Crate training is a really good way to start housebreaking..remembering to take him out after a good play and as soon as he wakes up and also after he eats...make a strict routine and he will be housebroken in no time!! Again..you must post pictures of this little man!!

I trained Paddington to go on a pee pad inside a tent, and to poop outside. He stays in his crate while I can't watch him 100% and every time I take him out we go straight to the pee pad. When he goes pee on the pad, I do a "pee pee" dance, and give him a treat that is specially reserved for correct potty behavior. Also, praise him AS SOON AS he sqauts to pee! I wait about 15 minutes after he's eaten, and then take him outside. When he poops outside, I do another dance with him, and give him a bigger treat (he is having difficulties with pooping outside, so he gets a super treat when he does it!!!) I give him the treat when we get inside, that way he is ready to go in when he's finished his business rather than chasing squirrels or whatever, but I make sure to verbally praise him when he is squatting... that is important, because otherwise he won't know what the heck you are so excited about! On the same note, if there is an accident, you can't do anything but sigh and clean it up. If you see him squatting in the incorrect place, pick him up (you might get peed on!) and put him in the right place. If he is still peeing, great, praise him and treat him. Most likely he won't be though, so just go and clean up the piddle trail. Don't say no to him, or yell because then he might think that he isn't allowed to pee or poop! In that case, he will go and hide when he's gotta go, and you won't find the mess for a while- not to mention it makes correcting it more difficult if you can't see it! Yelling might also make him afraid, and he'll go into submissive mode- something that dogs tend to show by peeing... so then you'll have him peeing even more while you're frustrated that he's peeing, and you will lose your temper very easily! You might want to look into clicker training. It speeds things up a lot. Just google "clicker dog training"
-O
I agree with this, other than the clicker thing. We trained Sukoshi using potty pads, and she took to them right away (we probably just got lucky). We gave her a treat everytime she went pee or poo on them, and when she didn't, we carried her to the pad and said, "Potty". She now knows what "Potty" means (well...it means pee OR poo in our house), and I take her there first thing in the morning and right before bed in the evening, say "Potty", and she goes. Other than that, she goes to her pad on her own whenever she needs (I just take her to the pad in the AM and PM because in the AM she is so excited to be awake and having "playtime" again that she forgets to go, and then in the PM I just like to make sure she's gone before she falls asleep). During the day, she has our 3/4 bathroom all to herself, with her couch, toys, water, and potty pad at her disposal. We put up a baby gate to keep her inside but to allow her to look out so she doesn't feel so closed off from the rest of the house. If you aren't able to give Oliver a separate area like that, then I would suggest using the crate, so any accidents are contained, like "OpheliaLoved" said.

Regarding the clicker, I think it does work great for some dogs, and it seemed to speed up the training for some of the dogs in Sukoshi's puppy training class, but Sukoshi herself was scared to death of the sound the clicker made, so we had to ixnay the idea of the clicker right away! You'll just have to see how Oliver reacts for that one! Good luck!!!

Thank you so much to those of you who are actually supporting my decision. And to those that do not, I totally understand why.. but at the same time its a puppy.. and it isn't his fault! Should we euthanize all puppymill dogs just because they are from a very undesirable place? Didn't think so. Like I said before if I didnt buy it, someone else would. And maybe that person wouldnt know about puppymills and not know what kind of conditions they have faced.

I am educated enough to know when a dog is sick. I have gone and played with him everyday for 3 days now. He plays and runs with the other puppies in the crate with him. He jumps. He plays and then randomly (and rather dramatically) topples over. He bites like regular puppies with those amazingly sharp teeth. I felt all over his body to make sure nothing felt weird and I checked in his ears to make sure he didn't have ear mites. I know I am no vet but I am taking him as soon as I get him tomorrow. (His appt is at 2:15) I got Roxie (my miniature dachshund) from a breeder and she had some infection that made her hair fall out and REALLY bad ear mites. I have not seen anything wrong with Oliver so I will assume for this rare circumstance he is healthy. He is current on all of his shots and will have a health guarantee. I wouldnt neceassarily say that puppies from breeders are any healthier than pet store dogs.. or at least in my case that is what happened.

For whoever asked how much I am paying for him... $400. I would never pay $600 or $900 or whatever you mentioned for a "mutt" (dont tell him I called him that!!). I know they have Yorkie mixes on websites but I have never found one I love like this one. I walked in and immediately fell in love with this dog. I don't know what it was about him but I think he's great!

I don't remember if there were any other questions/comments I intended to answer but these are my thoughts for now. I will take pictures as soon as I get him tomorrow and post them right away. Yall will all fall in love with my *possible* puppymill boy! I already got him a crate ready with tons of toys! All I need is the puppy now!

Oh and thank you so much to those who have offered advice about potty training. I think I am going to go with the crate training but take him outside all the time. And very excitedly scream "POTTY!!" everytime he's about to go. haha.

We all just try and educate people about the horrows of puppy mills, and when someone does know that buying a dog in a pet store just puts money in those millers pockets and keeps him in business, but goes right ahead and buys anyway, then you have just been responsible for killing other dogs. It has to stop, but if everyone keeps saying they need a home too, it never will. I tell people not to even go into a store that sells dogs. It simply MUST stop. We also need laws on the books that only so many dogs allowed in a family and NONE are to be kept outside 24-7 or in cages.
Your going to be calling on all these folks here at YT wanting help because your dog is sick. These dogs are generally in very bad health from unethical breeding practices. I've seen it too many times where people are spending thousands trying to keep their pet shop dogs well. You should really reconsider what your about to do.

I understand where you are coming from but as long as puppies are sold in pet stores there is going to be someone to buy them...instead the law should be that pet stores can't sell pets...I like the idea that some stores use and that is bringing in shelter dogs and cats for people to adopt...why cant that be the law...because it will NEVER happen that people will stop buying cute puppies from pet stores...never...unless the law dosent allow pet stores to bring in byb or puppymill dogs..

Ashley,

I know u know all the cons of buying from a pet shop, and you do have a point when u say that buying from a breeder at times is no better, I have bought from breeders and had health issues as well.

I know what its like to look into a puppies face and fall in love, I hope all goes well with Oliver and I can't wait to see his pic.

I have poodles and a yorkie and my little poodle and yorkie are trained to pads, (bigger poodle uses outdoors) I had the poodle trained to puppy litter but the yorkie would never use it no matter what I tried, so we settled on the puppy pads which they both use I do place them inside the puppy litter pans and use the medium size pans, this eliminates any overflow unto the floor etc. They will both go outside and go in the yard when weather is permitting. I find being trained to the pads in addition to going outside a real plus, cuz if I'm away more than a few hours I really needn't worry they have their indoor potty.

God bless you and Oliver I wish u the best.

I just do NOT get it HOW people can support abuse and cruelty???!!!

I am very sorry to tell that, and SORRY for being rude, but thinking that way that this is not puppy's fault, blah-blah-blah is very narow-minded.

Do you know how ANY business works? This is simple math. If store owner doesn't get profit from certain product, he/she will NOT buy same product again.
Now. Imagine, you are a pet store owner and bought puppies from a broker. Broker bought them from a puppymiller at wholesale price. Everyone made a profit, except you so far. If you sell them, you make a profit, and want to buy again. If you do NOT sell them, will you send them back???!!!

ha-ha, who will take them back and pay back? they will not!
If EVEN they take them back, who will pay for shipping? of course YOU !!!

Do you want to loose MORE money ot try to get rid of it asap?

Just think about it. There is NO profit for anybody.

Sorry again, but I cannot say "congrat" with new puppy from PET STORE. I only can say "Congrat, you are going to support puppy mill (read: animal abuse, cruelty)" .

Just think about poor parents of this puppy. Believe me, this puppy will be NOT send back. But people like you who say "I know about puppy mill, but he is cute"

I bought 2 of my dogs from pet stores and they were from puppy mills. I knew better after Bentley when I looked up his "breeder" information and it was listed as a well known puppy mill. The second time around Sean my husband bought me a lhasa apso from a kennel. He thought the kennel was different because they were bred at the site by the owners. She had horrible kennel cough that took weeks to get better. I could not change his decision, so there we were again with supporting a mill.

I know you say that "you know if a dog is sick", but what a lot of us are saying is that genetic problems can pop up down the road from the poor breeding. You of course will not know that when buying him, and YES any dog can have health issues.. but you take a bigger chance on one w/no thought breeding practices.

You might also notice that your puppy will have an underbite as he grows. That has happened with both of my mill dogs, and of course I love them just the same -- but it shows that there was no thought on breeding dogs that shouldn't have been bred in the first place.

It makes me just as upset to see dogs in pet stores and want to rescue them and give them a better life. But, the only way to stop puppy mills from happening is to stop feeding into their pockets by purchasing the puppies. Every time I walk into a pet store that sells dogs I have to remind myself what their mothers and fathers are enduring.. wasting away in their own filth.. in small cages.. those dogs that will never know love or the comfort of a warm, safe loving home.

But, this is how puppy mills stay in business... people with soft hearts that think they are helping, and people that impulse buy rather than wait it out for a puppy from a reputable source. These kinds of actions will only help these places stay in business.

Anyhow, I'm sure you have your mind made up and you'll be getting your new puppy regardless of the facts. I just could never in good conscious buy a puppy that perpetuates such sadness and I made a promise to my wonderful dogs that I never will again.

Sorry for busting in on your thread, but I had to say my piece on it. I do hope that regardless of if you get this puppy or not you know that yt members will be there to help you with questions you may have.

I dont think she needs to be put down..thats not what YT is all about...you dont have to support her decision...and you also dont have to post on her thread if you dont agree...calling someone narrow minded or any name calling isnt needed...there are rules...
