| I just wanted to let you know I just graduated from college in December (Texas A&M University) and am starting vet school in a month so we're probably right around the same age. And I definitely understand how bad you want a puppy. I know how bad I wanted one when I got Lacy and I want another pretty bad right now too! Just please step back and really think about this decision. Give it a little more time. I think you could probably even find a purebred yorkie for what some of those petstores ask for mixes.

i totally agree with everything you said im so upset by this im crying just to think that by her buying him his parents will live a horrible life plz dont support this its not okay to buy dogs from pet shops. When i bought my pure bred yorkie i thought i was getting her for a good price $625 with the shipping included turns out later wen i got her it was a mill my coco is healthy but has mental issues she has separation anxiety to the point where i had to quit my job to take care of her she is 8months old and is not potty trained we have tryed everything even a professional nothing seems to work... i work with her every day but it is draining, my familly wants me to get rid of her but i wont i bought her from a mill and this is the price i pay. i am now going to take her to a behaviorist which is going to cost me so much but i love her and am willing to work thru this with her she's my baby. please think again about what ur about to do... | |

| Ashley Rhea, I don't want you to feel like you're being judged, or we're trying to chase you away. YT is here for you whether you bring home that yorkie/poodle from the petstore or not. As you can tell, we just care about dogs a whole lot, and don't want to support their suffering. We care about you too, and we don't want to see your heart broken if you become one of the horror stories that we hear about all the time regarding puppymill puppies. If you decide to go through with this, we will ooh and ah over your new puppy just the same! I promise you that if you decide not to support the cruelty, we will help you find the perfect yorkie or yorkiepoo that is within your price range. YT works miracles, believe me!

| I think this is something she needs to choose on her own. I hate puppy mills, but everyone says that their dog chose them and, well, it sounds like he chose her. I also see her point- why should the puppy be miserable just because of what stupid people have done to his parents? IMO boycotting from individual consumers does nothing anyway. Boycotting from a small group of consumers does nothing... Major companies boycotting might make them pause for a moment. This is turning into a different thread. Ashley, I would say definitely crate him while you're away. Even if he goes in his crate, the mess will be contained. If he's only in there a few hours at a time and you clean the crate every time you take him out, it would be better than cleaning a whole house full of puddles. I trained Paddington to go on a pee pad inside a tent, and to poop outside. He stays in his crate while I can't watch him 100% and every time I take him out we go straight to the pee pad. When he goes pee on the pad, I do a "pee pee" dance, and give him a treat that is specially reserved for correct potty behavior. Also, praise him AS SOON AS he sqauts to pee! I wait about 15 minutes after he's eaten, and then take him outside. When he poops outside, I do another dance with him, and give him a bigger treat (he is having difficulties with pooping outside, so he gets a super treat when he does it!!!) I give him the treat when we get inside, that way he is ready to go in when he's finished his business rather than chasing squirrels or whatever, but I make sure to verbally praise him when he is squatting... that is important, because otherwise he won't know what the heck you are so excited about! On the same note, if there is an accident, you can't do anything but sigh and clean it up. If you see him squatting in the incorrect place, pick him up (you might get peed on!) and put him in the right place. If he is still peeing, great, praise him and treat him. Most likely he won't be though, so just go and clean up the piddle trail. Don't say no to him, or yell because then he might think that he isn't allowed to pee or poop! In that case, he will go and hide when he's gotta go, and you won't find the mess for a while- not to mention it makes correcting it more difficult if you can't see it! Yelling might also make him afraid, and he'll go into submissive mode- something that dogs tend to show by peeing... so then you'll have him peeing even more while you're frustrated that he's peeing, and you will lose your temper very easily! You might want to look into clicker training. It speeds things up a lot. Just google "clicker dog training" -O

| I'm curious to know how much you are going to be paying for this mix. i'm not stating my opinions on wether or not you should buy this dog (i try to avoid heated discussions) i know you have probably fallen for this pup hard!!! it is so easy to do. but knowing you are buying from a pet store, you are probably going to be spending several hundred dollars for this pup. I guarantee you can find the pure yorkie you have been longing for, for the same amount of money. and get a akc registered one at that. maggie was close to $800 and I know there are several breeders around here selling for around $600. i am sure you will pay that...or close to it...for this mix at the pet store. unless they are running their $499 special they always seem to be running. either way, you can still get a yorkie for the money you are spending for this dog who may or may not have some SERIOUS health problems and who knows what kind of life that dog had. I will say, I have heard that the dogs that live the kind of life where they spend the first few months living in a cage are very hard to potty train. makes sense. just talk to some people on here...or other places...who have bought from pet stores and see what the common problems are. not just your friend that has bought from them...but others as well. talk to as many people as possible. this is a life changing decision...take the time to thoroughly do research to know what you are getting into. i know people who have bought from pet stores and have had no problems...and i know people with just the opposite experience. just be careful. i'm sure if you look on YT, petfinder, and other rescue sites... you might be able to find a baby in need of a new home and you won't spend near the money that you will for a pet store dog...and probably much healthier. either way, i wish you luck and a lifetime of happiness with your new dog. just make sure you really put a lot of thought into your decision. and please remember that the ladies here are just concerned and want to bring all of the possibilities to the table for you...this is the most anti-puppy mill site i have ever seen and these pet stores get their puppies from puppy mills. bottom line. period. it is hard to not "rescue" that poor baby. but that is how these people stay in business. by putting some sad little puppies in a cage in a store and breaking people's hearts and causing an irrational decision to be made just because they feel sorry for the dog in the cage. well...the dog will find a home. but you don't have to be the one to contribute to the horrible trend of puppy mills. you might as well walk up to the door of a puppy mill breeder and hand them your money...because that is what happens when you buy one of these puppys. ok...i wasn't going to say those things...but i can't help it. i will pray that you make the decision that is right for you and your future pup.

I completely understand where your coming from...I bought Louie from a pet store before i really knew the deal about puppymills. I feel the same way tho, i hate that my money prolly went to support keeping puppymills running but i fell in love with Louie when i first saw him. Besides, he needed a home and i needed him, he's my theraphy.

| yorkies cheap? i looked for 2 years online and in the paper for a yorkie and finally found one for 800.00. and for 800 she isnt even akc she is only apri. wish i would have know about this group earlier, although then i wouldnt have lacey. all the yorkies i seen range from 1200.00 to 3000.00. most breeders have a waiting list and you cant pick the puppy you fall in love with, they want you to put a deposit down and take what ever sex you requested with out meeting all the dogs. and most of the rescue dogs i seen had health issues, my heart goes out to them but i wanted a healthy puppy.5 dogs = alot of vet bills lol. good luck with your decision. i have gotten dogs from all diff places and some had problems some didnt. |

| That is not true of reputable breeders. Reputable breeders care about their puppies and try to find the most loving and compatible forever home, and would never shove any random puppy of the desired sex on a person with that as the only qualification. Sounds like you were dealing with puppy mills and "greeders" that only care about money.

| I very strongly disagree with this. That is the same mentality as saying, why should I vote? One vote doesn't make a difference. Every single individual's actions do matter very much.

| Good luck to you and your new puppy. Please make sure he is healthy first and is UTD on his shots. If the vet checks him out and all is well, bless you for giving him a home. My Buddy was a pet store pup and I can't imagine life without him. He is beautiful and healthy. If you know before hand what to look for and what to do you will be saving yourself heartache in the future and it sounds like you have things under control. Not all pet store pups are sick. Many are for sure but so are they from breeders. God knows there are enough posted here on YT. Just make sure he's healthy. It's a shame to think that when one is purchased from a store it is supporting puppy mills but I too believe they are deserving of loving homes as well. |
