| Are Yorkies more delicate, healthwise than other little dogs? After the third trip to an emergency vet in a couple of years...I am starting to wonder about the health of purebred dogs, or maybe Yorkies in particular. I know they are prone to certain congenital things as are many different breeds, but Im talking about something different than that. I have two other little dogs, a Maltese and a Yorkie poo (who is actually smaller than my Yorkie) and neither of them have the problems that my Yorkie does. It just seems that she is so fragile, and I constantly worry about her. This trip to the vet was because she had bloody diarrhea and become dehydrated. Now all three of my dogs eat the same food, walk the same paths, and live the same life basically...why then does the Yorkie get sick? Same with the other trips to the vet...one for some kind of weird rash with which she became fairly ill, and the third time was for a terrible cough or choking sound which they said was an inverse sneeze. Is it just my dog and possibly because my son got her from a pet store or is it just me, worrying too much? Two of the trips were really necessary as she was pretty sick so I dont think I overreacted. It seems I worry as much about this little one as I did for my kids. Laura |

Bella Boo & Diggy Too! Donating GS Member | yorkie thing? I would say its just like kids....different immunities and all. I raise my kids with my sisters....we had our first 6 weeks apart and Edmond (her son) was sick all the time, ear infections, colds, flus, everything else but my daughter Avery who was exposed ot the same thing she never got sick? they slept together bathed together basically raised like twins. SO Id say its just one of those things...I have 2 yorkies and neither have problems...well i did with my youngest but all reasonable explainations...He was hypo and came form poor conditions...but as soon as i got the hang of it he is VERY healthy. So I'd say its an individual thing not a Yorkie thing...Just my opinion hope it helps!

| I don't know if it's a Yorkie thing or not, BUT, my little one, who is now a year-and-a-half old has had his fair share of illnesses: He was hypoglycemic twice, pancreatitis once, gastroenteritis once, and kennel cough twice. You'd think I was neglecting him -- but he's treated like a little prince! This last bout of kennel cough he got from being at the groomer's for five hours -- and he's had his bordatella shot! I do feel that Archie is more delicate than other dogs I've had. I had one little toy poodle who was healthy as a horse his whole life and another toy poodle who had a heart murmur, but who lived to be 13, when his heart gave out. Otherwise, he had no health issues. Archie has had more illnesses in his year and a half than the other two did their whole lives. I just think I have a delicate little guy -- though to look at him, he is strudy (at a whopping 4 pounds), has lots and energy and is a happy dog. I think it's just like kids, each one is different.

| I think it just depends on the dog.. just like people.. sometimes even the healthiest person can get sick/injured the easiest.. Princess doesnt have any health problems at all.. im so surprised esp since she thinks shes a daredevil and invincible.. |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | I've only owned a Yorkie for three years, but so far the Lab I owned years ago had more health problems. Eddie, knock on wood, has never been sick or injured. Jack came to me with health issues, bad leg, bad teeth, hernia, but he's developed no new problems in the year and a half I've owned him. I think, as diggy4 said, it's all genetics.

My furkids Donating Member | I own 2 yorkies. (knock on wood!) I have never had any issues with them. Sadie is 3 1/2 yrs and Lillie is 13 months. They are very healthy little girls. But, I bought from a breeder. When a pet is bought at a pet store you never really know what you are getting. Pet store puppies are 99% of the time bought from puppy mills. Therefore, you never really know what you are getting. Puppy mill breeders don't care about the animal at all! All they care about is the all mighty dollar. They are kept in horrible living conditions and breed the females until they just can't breed anymore and kept in very unclean and unhealthy living conditions. You should read up on puppymills, you will get a better understanding on why some of these little puppies are so sick. I hope that your little one is going to be ok and Welcome to YT!

| I agree with others, that it's just like kids. Your yorkie might have a weaker immune system than your other furbabies. |

| I would also think it might be because he came from a pet store. |

| I agree 100 % about pet shop pups, of any kind. I don't even shop in a pet shop that sells pups. I drive further to avoid the one here in town. DOWN WITH PUPPY MILLS. There are to many good breeders to buy from to have to buy from mills. |
