| Lexie is getting spayed tomorrow...I have questions Ok, so Lexie is getting spayed tomorrow. She's 8 months old and roughly 3 1/2 lbs. I know there are tons of benefits to spaying her, but I'm concerned about risks. My stomach is in knots and I'm trying not to let it show b/c I don't want Lexie to end up picking up on my personal freaking out. I need you guys' sage wisdom since many of you have been through this. I have a few questions. 1) Will her personality change? She's so playful and affectionate, just all around good hearted. I'd hate to lose that 2) I'm concerned about anesthesia. Sometimes people don't deal well with it, what about dogs? I've seen people end up with alzheimer's like symptoms. The vet says he uses gas, normally with these small babies 3) Healing time. What can I expect? I'm asking you guys and of course have spoken to the vet. Your answers have more weight with me since you live with yorkies and like I said, many of you have been there. Thanks for being here. |

| Each pup is different as to how they react. Most vets will tell you to keep them calm, don't let them run, climb stairs or jump for 10 days (yeah, right!). Most pups will bounce right back within a day or two and you'd never know they had just had surgery. Others take a little longer to heal and a few will have complications. Do your best to keep her calm once you bring her home for at least a day or two. Make sure the vet sends home pain meds. Letting them "feel the pain" to keep their activity level low isn't going to do that and will just cause them pain!! Watch your baby - you know them better than anyone. You will know if something isn't right. The incision should be kept clean and dry. If there is swelling, redness, any oozing or smells - have it check out right away. I didn't notice a personality change at all with Sissy. She is still playful and energetic. It's too early to tell yet with Angel. They may gain a little weight following the spay as well. Hope this helps and we'll be thinking of you and Lexie tomorrow. Good luck!! MissBesty - hope everything goes well for your baby too.

| 1) Will her personality change? She's so playful and affectionate, just all around good hearted. I'd hate to lose that -- No, her personality will not change AT ALL. 2) I'm concerned about anesthesia. Sometimes people don't deal well with it, what about dogs? I've seen people end up with alzheimer's like symptoms. The vet says he uses gas, normally with these small babies -- Gas is the best. Sounds like your vet has experience with small dogs so I wouldn't worry. You will have the option to get pre-surgery blood work done. DEFINATELY get it done. It will check all of her organs to make sure they are stable enough to handle the anesthesia. As long as the blood test comes back negative, then you should have nothing to worry about regarding the anesthesia. 3) Healing time. What can I expect? It took my little girl, Hootie, no time to heal. They'll probably give her some pain meds so you'll really need to watch her. The pain meds will make her feel well, when she isn't well. You'll need to make sure she doesn't go up and down any stairs, doesn't jump on/off the bed or couch, and make sure she rests so she can heal properly. I would make her chill out until she gets her stitches out. And watch her incision. It is fine if she licks it. But, if he becomes red, put some Neosporin on it. If it gets worse than just a little red, you'll need to take her to the vet for them to look at. But hopefully you won't have any problems! Keep us updated on how your little girl does! I'm sure she'll be fine! |

| Thank you LuvMySissy, thank you. I'm really hoping for the best. I just can't wait for tomorrow to be over. She's also having a tooth extracted and microchip done. I wanted to get everything done in one whack. RLC, great information. I did opt for the safety/care package which includes preop bloodwork to check her liver and kidneys and that does ease my mind somewhat. They recommend it highly at my vet's office. They said they like to have it done if nothing else as a baseline for any health issues that might arise later. I work from home so I plan to keep her in my sight at all times. When I can't give her my undivided attention we decided we will keep her in the playpen she had as a little puppy. Last edited by LilLexieLu; 06-25-2007 at 10:32 AM. |

| I just brought Sassy home and she is fine just very sleepy and a little winey ( i think she may be milking it a bit her daddy seems to think he should fuss with her all the time covering her up and making sure she has a little water so i think he is being a pest but she seems to be liking it ) but other than that she is fine i did give her a little nutrical because they said she didn't eat anything. I hope she continues on the same way tomorrow. I will be praying for your little one let me no how she makes out. |

I'm glad Sassy came home well. How is she today? Lexie is at the vet's right now. I'm anxious but I'm hanging in there. Thank you for the prayers. I can't wait until it's all over, healing and all | |
