I feel so bad giving such downer advice to Bradley Wieseha. You seem like you'd be a great Yorkie owner. But the fact that so many of us are urging you caution is a testament to the fact that expenses will come. You might consider health insurance like Michiko suggests. The main thing for me was having a credit card and a means to pay it off it the big expense came. Jack needed a $1,300 surgery weeks after we got him. I didn't have that kind of cash lying around, but I knew I could pay off the credit card if I had to. You're going to fall in love with whatever dog you get and you're going to pay whatever it takes to get them healthy. Good luck in your decision. And if you do get one, add a digital camera into the expense list because we're all gonna wanna see pictures.

When you are ready for the financial responsibility and the time commitment, come here and find your Yorkie from one of the wonderful breeders here. This way you are more likely to get a nice healthy, well adjusted pup that will bring you JOY instead of worry and heartache. Meanwhile, read everything you can get your hands on about Yorkies, their health issues, grooming and diet needs, etc. etc. You will be the BEST Yorkie parent EVER by the time you are ready to get your baby

| I can attest for the cost here. Since June 2007 we ran into lots of issues. Now we are seeing a specialist. LAst weeks visit for my two girls it was $1054.00. zI was definitely weak in the knees when they gave us our total when we checked out. We did complete blood work up on both and urinalysis on both with UPC check with the urine and 1 of my girls had to have a bile acid test. the comp blood work up was $265.00- urinalyis was $57.00 added upc for $113.50 vet visit was $53.00 bile acid test was $117.00 med waste charge of 9.45. that was for one dog $615.00! same thing for my other yorkie but minus the bat. $440.00- so yes indeed it does add up!!! We keep a budget- so I know exactly what we had to spend- 2007 total was $5423.00 (this also inc food and meds) and so far this year $1765.00. Ain't HAPPY about this at all. But who knew? and is it worth it??? for my little angels... YES!!! we are hoping things will get resolved and we will be on our way to spending LESS on vet bills and enjoying MORE of our healthy happy dogs. A specialist -YES- costs a lot! Unfortunately for us - we had a vet who was TEST HAPPY! and she took us for a nice ride. She is not our vet anymore! We only see the specialist now for everything. Spend lots yeah- but less in the end bc they know what to test for. it was a BIG learning experience for us. :-( When you own a yorkie you also need a great vet. especially experienced with the small breed. It makes me nervous because they are 10 and 9 yrs and things from this point are only going to progress. As they age more problems can arise and it really gets expensive quick. I do not think i will ever own another yorkie WITHOUT pet insurance that's for sure. Last edited by sadiesamie; 04-02-2008 at 09:25 PM. |

| I think the most expensive factor of owning a dog, not just Yorkies are vet bill and food (if you want to feed good food). I bought my Yorkie for $700which is a good price to many but in addition to that in the first month I spent about $800 more for vet check-ups, vaccines, diarrhea, food, grooming, toys etc. I think if you have a saving of about $1000 on top of your puppy price, you should be okay unless it is an emergency. Then from month to month, it is the food that is most expensive for mine. I feed him Evangers and Cannidae plus homecooked chicken, salmon etc costs about $80 a month in total. For grooming, I do my own grooming except for the cutting nails part so you just have to start out with a good clipper and a good video of how to groom. Shampoo and fur upkeep isn't so bad for me as I use Burgham senior shampoo, its not very expensive, it is very good and it lasts a long time for just one dog and I have a bottle of Emu Oil which is totally good for his keeping his fur soft and skin moisturized and that don't cost a lot and lasts forever. As for clothes, I think the basics that you need is a winter jacket if it gets cold where you stay and a few pajamas for the cold nights and maybe a tee or two. Won't cost a lot depending on where you buy them, maybe about $100 max for all. If you have the time and skill to make your own bed and clothes, even better. I made 2 beds for mine and 3 pieces of clothing. Whatever decision you make, good luck to you. I think if anything, you just have to worry most about vet care and good food. All others can be managed with good planning. Edit: Just saw your update. I am so sorry. I hope someday you will get your own Yorkie. I do agree they do need a lot of attention on top of the expenses especially the sucky ones like mine is. Puppy sitter is another expense as well. I have spent hundreds just on that alone.

I know you can't always anticipate the cost of owning any dog, emergencies do happen. Check your budget and see if you could handle the normal expenses and try to save up a little for emergencies. This is a good price if the dogs are healthy and well socialized. I know how you can yearn for a little guy. Good luck making your decision...try to think outside the box and there may be an answer for you that you didn't expect.

| A good thing you can do is to contact your local vet, pick a few. Don't just call go in and talk to the front staff. Tell them you are looking for a yorkie to adopt. Sometimes they get yorkies in that have been abandoned, lost, neglected etc..If they don't have any at the time leave your name and contact info. Alot of small dogs end up at the vets cause that is the first place people take them when they are hurt or lost.. Alot of dogs never get claimed. The staff ( like me) will have to foster or find homes for them. It is worth a try..never give up keep calling if you don't hear back in awhile. I have experienced clients not being able to pay for the vet bill and end up leaving their dogs,,it is sad .but it happens. Pets in general are expensive, if this is meant to be, your yorkie wil find you!!! good luck. Last edited by ckuz13; 04-03-2008 at 09:05 AM. |

| Follow your heart I have had a teacup for almost 13 years now. Yes, she's been to the vet a few times! I just got Maggie last May. I borrowed money and paid it back on my own because it was something I wanted to do. I bought her w/o hubby's approval....just brought her home. I have NEVER regretted it. Hubby is so much in love with her I am on my way to getting another!!! LOL I was always told "if you wait until you can afford to have kids (skin babies) you'll never have them." Maybe that's true maybe not....just follow your heart ....be realistic.....oh yeah and Maggie grew to be 4 lbs. Knock on wood no problems! Kirby , the teacup is 3lbs. What a difference a pound makes!!!! |

| I didn't read all the replies but I will say that I haven't had any costly vet bills. Around where I live the vet doesn't charge very much. I haven't had any health problems with any of my dogs. Knock on wood
