| Allowing Free Roam!?! Gypsy is 18wks on Monday and weighing around 5lbs now. She's been fine with her crate when there's been no one in with minimal accidents, the occasional poo when she's eaten recently and then I've had to go out, (which I expect once in a while cuz she's still young) and sleeps in the bedroom at night and goes to the toilet on her pee pad in the bedroom without fail. During the day when I am home she wees on the pee pad in the front room but doesn't poo on it, even though I know she knows she should cuz she does at night. Now you know about her toilet habits this is the situation... The last three times I have left her only, whether it be a few hours or half an hour she has excaped from her crate. She's worked out that if she pulls the door to the side where the hinges are she can get the top hinge off and then climbs out. When I've got back there has been NO damage and NO accidents at all on all three times, she can pull open doors that are pushed too and not closed properly even if they are pushed right to and so has been able to get all over my flat... yet still NO havoc. Earlier I had to nip to the shop and left her loose... I closed the bathroom door, bedroom door and the kitchen door is on a safety fire hinge so she can never open it anyway. I allowed her the front room, hallway passage between front room, bedroom and main hallway and also left the main hallway door open. As I was putting my shoes on she thought she was coming with me and I calmly picked her up, put her in the passage way but where she could see the front door and told her to "sit" and "wait". I tell her "stay" when I am taking her for a walk and then when the door is open I "k, we can go now" and keep putting her back till she only walks out the door on my say so, I don't want to associate "stay" with me leaving the flat without her. After a couple of times of me starting to open the door, her coming to it and me putting her back she realised what I wanted her to do... I opened the door, walked out, looked to see her still sat there and just closed it and went to the shop. I was gone half an hour and when I came back she greeted me at the door all bouncy and excited. I ignored her till I'd taken my shoes off and checked for any accidents and damage and then when there was none I made a huge fuss of her! So, what I was wondering is... based on her behavour towards her crate and her good behavour when allowed free roam... do you think she should be allowed to have the run of the flat while I'm out? I know she's still young but she's pretty well behaved, never approaches power cables, knows what's hers and what's mine and is nearly toilet trained to the pee pads. I'm worried she'll hurt herself trying to get out the crate if I make it so she can't if I keep her contained while I'm out... What do you think? Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to make sure you knew everything...

| I have just started letting Hannah have free run the house (well most of the house) when I am gone. I used to lock her in the hall way, but she seemed to make more of a mess being locked up. I close the bedroom doors and the bathroom door and she has the living room, kitchen and diningroom. It is working out great for us. She is 5 1/2 months old. |

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | If your dog is doing well uncrated and you haven't had an accidents, go for it. It may be she can only be out for certain number of hours....you'll figure it out. |

| Well at the minute I'm not working so she only gets left when I go places she can't come so she's never left for too long... between 10minutes - 4 hours... should be good enough times for her to adjust

| It works out better for me this way. When she is locked up and I come home she has submissive urine accidents on the floor, but now she doesn't. She seems happier. When she is locked up she will tear up her potty pad too, but when she is left out whe leaves it alone because she knows that is where it is supposed to be. She is really particular about where things are in the house, if something isn't where it is suppsoed to be or if I bring something new into the house she goes crazy...LOL. One time she was barking at the patio doors and she was jumping and going crazy, it was a big box that our filing cabinet came in, she didn't know what it was but she knew it wasn't supposed to be on her patio...LOL. I think that it will be fine for your little one to stay out. Just make sure that there is nothing she can get into, they will find anything. |

| Sounds like she is better off out of the crate. Reese was almost the same way and we finally decided he was better off with free roam. I think it must depend on the baby. Good Luck!!! |

| What a smart puppy! You have worked very hard or that pup is genius. Way to go both of you . I would leave her out & if she messes up go back to the crate & try again. & Beware of superman I hear he's lost his powers |

| I will be glad when Summerlin is able to wander. Even when I am in the house, if the big dog is inside, then she can't wander free unless I am right there. I am afraid that the big dog will accidentally hurt her.... When he is outside, Summerlin is allowed to wander where ever she wants. She has herself a good ole' time... |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Most of mine were over 8 months before I let them have free run as they were quite content to be in their pen or area. Cali didn't get free until she was 13months old because she liked to go in her pen. I would say I have to go to Nana's and she would run in her playpen and lay down. Now Pixie who I got at 13 months and wasn't housebroken, is a nightmare when confined. After the first night I put her in my bed and she was fine because she screamed when I put her in the playpen. When I had to g out and noone else was here I would put her in the pen and she screamed forever, Then she tore a hole through the playpen and escaped twice, Now we have a plastic crate and she hates it. I would leave her out but I am still a little nervous woth all 3 dogs loose that a fight may start. I can't wait until I can trust her to be loose. So I say if Gypsy seems fine with being out go for it.

| Well, I would give it a go! I am not one to crate, just never have, but both are fully 100% trustworthy to free roam the entire house and not a problem but they are both much older than Gypsy. So give it a go!!!! As long as you are certain that she will not bother anything that is dangerous in the free roaming areas..........that would be my only concern. Any accidents can be cleaned up but sounds like she has the pee pad training idea already established enough that accidents will not happen.

| Pip has had free roam of the house since she was about 4 months old, (she's 7 months now). She's really exceptionally smart, doesn't even chew shoes anymore! |
