| panting in car. normal? howie used to never do this, but for the past month or so now, everytime we're in the car, he sticks his tounge out like he's panting or is thirsty. i try to give him water but he doesn't want to drink it. is this normal and will he be okay? i feel like his body would get tired from all of that. sometimes the drives are long (an hour or so), so i'm kind of worried. but, how do i not take him in the car? even when we take 15 minute drives now, he'll do this. is he okay? thanks in advance! |

| My male yorkie, Hobbs, pants and shakes when he rides in the car. I asked the vet about it and she said it won't hurt him to do that, but she prescribed him some doggie Valium for me to give to him to calm him down. I would not worry about it. If he starts shaking like Hobbs does and it bothers you, ask the vet about the Valium. But if it doesn't bother you, rest assured knowing that it won't hurt him. He is just excited. |

| I just wanted to add that I only give the doggie Valium if we are going on a LOOOOOOOONG car ride....like 2+ hours. Otherwise I don't worry about it. |

| at first that's what i thought it was - him needing air. so i roll down the windows and that doesn't help at all either. and yes, i feel really bad. but, since it seems like all our yorkies do it, it eases my mind a little. poor thing. he used to be able to sleep soundly in the car too! but now, he just sits there with his tounge out. the other day he was really tired (just got done at the doggy park) and he finally laid down, but still got up and seemed bothered. thank you for the replies! |

| Winnie hasn't had a problem in the car...but when I was younger we had a golden retriever that would get "car sick." He would pant and drool over the backseat...seriously it looked like someone had hosed the backseat down. And he only went on short rides (to the vet or to the park). It doesn't hurt them, just some pets get anxious in the car. And like some other people already mentioned...if it's really bad you can get a prescription for a doggie sedative. |

| Ferdinand pants like you described in the car also. And he yawns a ton. But he's always happy as can be, so I don't worry about it.

| panting in car Cocoa pants in the car, and licks the window. I think she gets real thirsty in the car, so I always bring water for her.

| Cooper has always loved to go in the car, and still does, but lately he has started this behaviour too. We roll down the window and it helps for a little bit, but then he starts back up again. I feel sometimes that I am stressing him, by taking him...but I think he hates to be left too...so he goes and pants and I guess he is not alone in this.

| panting in car Today I was listening to a vet call in show on the radio. Someone asked this question. The vet said if the dog throws up it is getting dizzy it is motion sickness. If the dog just shakes and pants it could have anxiety about being in the car. He said to take the dogs favorite toy put in the car with dog in drive way. Don't go anywhere, just let the dog stay in the car with you for about five or ten minutes. Next day same thing. Gradually increase time, always with the favorite toy that he gets only in the car. Take the dog on short trips, to the mailbox, store or whatever. The problem is a lot of dogs don't like being in the car for long periods, so you have to desensitize them. I thought this made a lot of sence. Good luck
