| A few questions from a new yorkie "mommy" First of all I would like to say Hello to everyone! I stumbled across YT about a week ago while doing a search for yorkie diet info I am so glad I did, I've been reading alot of past threads/posts and have found many of them very helpful!Anyway I got my 1st yorkie(2year old boy named Buddy)about 2 weeks ago from my cousin who was rehoming him due to her increasing health problems.I had wanted a yorkie for quite a long time and had been in the process of searching for a female puppy when he came along,I couldnt resist,About 4 days ago I responded to an ad about a 1year old girl ,she is the sweetest little thing,(20 month old Reese). My first question is:The last 2 days Buddy has been really strange with Reese hes always sniffing/licking her rearend and licking her neck and face,he tries to do the same to her urine then his bottom jaw quivers does this mean shes coming into heat?Q 2;Reese's hair was really thin/coarse looking when I got her I thought it may be her diet and in the days that Ive had her its looking better but will it become any thicker?Sorry for the book I wrote on my first post! |

If you aren't planning a litter, now is the time to be careful. LOL Oh, and about the hair, I am having the same problem with my little female. Thinking of renaming her to scraggle muffin. |

| I'm hoping her hair is diet related and we can figure out a solution, the woman I got her from said she fed her dogs once in the morning and gave them water a few times a day so they wouldnt need to relieve themselves too often, after seeing Reese pick through her food and eat one piece at a time a few times a day I doubt she was getting enough to eat, I let her drink water as often as she wants and she still doesn't drink excessive or urinate too often. |

| Hi, welcome to yorkietalk I'm no expert on your questions but it does sound like she's going into heat. I have a male pekingese and he acted the same way towards my Trixie. She wasn't bleeding yet but I knew it had to be close. I had her at the vet getting fixed right away She was just 6 months and I thought I had a little more time but I guess you never know. As for the thin hair. I don't personally use anything for my girls but I think a few people might use missing link. (I'm not absolutely sure about this). Search some older threads and I'm sure you'll find something. Good Luck to you and enjoy those babies

| Buddy is definately letting you know that Reese is coming into season. He's investigating her rear end to see if she's ready for mating, the neck licking is an affectionate type of kissing. The urine tasting, especially with the lip quivering (always reminds me of Hannibal Lecter in the film ) is also very typical behaviour. You need to be really careful now to prevent them mating, best is to keep them apart. If you haven't noticed any bleeding, then she's probably keeping herself very clean, so you've no chance of telling when the discharge clears, her vulva softens & she's ready to accept a dog, which can be anything from about 9 days into her season. As you don't know when she actually started, I;d keep them apart now if I was you. As for the thin coat, that could well be diet related. I always prefer to feed my little dogs, my Cairns as well as Yorkies, 2 meals a day. One in the morning & the other in the evening. I think perhaps she isn't getting quite enough. A very good food for growing a good coat is Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier, if you can get it. I have to order it specially here where I live. It keeps their teeth nice & clean too. Hope this helps a bit |

| Sissy is spayed, so I don't have any experience with heat. Missing Link is a great supplement to help get their coats in shape. It is considered a "super food" so it is also really good for those who might be picky eaters. Sissy's coat has definitely thickened up from using ML. You can usually find it at PetsMart. If you decide to use it, start with very small amounts and gradually build up. It is very high in fiber and can cause stomach problems if you give too much too fast. The normal dosage is 1 tsp for a 20 lb dog, so depending on your pup's weight a daily dose is going to be small. Good luck!!

Most people will start to see a difference in the texture and look of the coat in the first month.
