| Blood panel before neutering or not? I'm getting Howie neutered in the near future (hoping his baby teeth will fall out soon, so I can neuter him sooner than later) and I've read a LOT about having a blood panel done. I really want to. The only thing that is making me hesitate is the blood panel cost as much as the neuter itself ($150). I wouldn't mind so much if it were an extra say, $50 but I feel like $150 is a lot. Does anyone agree? But, I also want to know for sure that he has no conditions that will harm him while being under. These are the decisions I hate. Please tell me your stories of having a blood panel vs. not. The good and the bad. I have read about one person who found out that there was something wrong with their baby's liver; any other stories? Thanks in advance. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | My opinion is I would always have it done. I do not want to takw a chance that they have an underlying kidney or liver problem that would cause them to nave complications form surgery. The price seems a little high.

| I have never not done the pre op bloodwork, its never cost as much as the price you were given. There are so many what ifs that could be seen in the bloodwork and not seen on the outside. My breeder friend placed one of her retired bitches and a few years after the new owners took her to the vet for a dental cleaning and didnt do the bloodwork, dog never woke up. Just recently another friend (it wasnt a yorkie) did the preop bloodwork everything came back fine, as the dog was coming out of the anesthesia he went into cardiac arrest and died.

| Bella's blood work was $45. You should ask your vet why it is so much. But, it really is a good thing.

| Thank you for all your replies. I should ask my vet why the blood work cost so much. I have a feeling I won't get any good reason answer, hehe. I know everyone is right about it being SOOOOOOOO worth it, but I can't help but feel like, what the heck -- why is it as much as the surgery itself! I'm sure everyone can see where I'm coming from. But, if something ever happend to Howie, I wouldn't be able to blame myself if I could have avoided it by doing the blood panel. Ahhhh!!! And Nancy, I did read that thread. That's the one I was referring to. |

| I, too, think that is high for blood work. My vet, whom I think is very expensive, but I like her alot, told me the bloodwork was also good for a baseline example as they get older. Cooper's blood work was 80.00, about half the cost of his neuter. I did call around and could have gotten Cooper's done cheaper elsewhere, however, as I said, I like Cooper's vet alot, she always spends as much time as needed with us and always remembers Cooper and things about him. (I think that is very important) So, I went ahead and payed the higher cost for peace of mind. If you aren't thrilled with your vet, call around, it wouldn't hurt to price compare and maybe even get a vet you were happier with...if you like the vet you already have..I would get the bloodwork done, firstly cause it's a good thing, but secondly for your peace of mind, surgery day is tough enough, without second guessing your decisions on the bloodwork...that is just my two cents Good luck!
